End of a cycle zone

When you see the Zeichen
This sign marks the end of the bicycle zone, so its special rules no longer apply from this point onwards. Pay immediate attention to any further traffic signs and to the general rules on speed, Vorfahrt and permitted types of traffic.
Rules
- The maximum speed of 30 km/h that applies within the bicycle zone ends here, unless it continues to be imposed by another traffic sign.
- The restriction imposed by the bicycle zone to bicycle traffic and explicitly permitted types of traffic ends; beyond the sign, access is governed by the traffic signs applying there.
- The sign does not regulate Vorfahrt. At the following junction, any existing Vorfahrt signs or traffic lights apply; otherwise, the priority-to-the-right rule applies.
- The end of the bicycle zone does not automatically cancel other arrangements, such as a 30 km/h zone, one-way street or restriction on through traffic.
Tips
- Do not accelerate before the sign, or afterwards unless the applicable maximum speed and the traffic situation allow it.
- Look out for new speed-limit, Vorfahrt or one-way-street signs beyond the sign.
- Continue to pay particular attention to cyclists leaving the bicycle zone or crossing the carriageway at its end.
Common misunderstandings
- The sign is confused with the end of a mandatory cycle path. However, it marks the end of an entire bicycle zone, not just an individual cycle path.
- Many learner drivers assume that the speed limit is always 50 km/h immediately afterwards. In fact, a different speed limit may apply; the sign may also be placed outside geschlossene Ortschaften.
- Some people believe that cyclists automatically have Vorfahrt at the end of the zone. The sign contains no Vorfahrt regulation.
Exam tip
A typical exam trap is whether you may accelerate immediately after the sign. The correct answer is: The 30 km/h limit resulting from the zone ends, but the speed permitted afterwards can only be determined from further traffic signs, the general maximum speed limits and the specific traffic situation.
Did you know
Zeichen 244.3 “Fahrradzone” and Zeichen 244.4 “Ende einer Fahrradzone” were added to the StVO in 2020. Bicycle zones allow local authorities to give connected areas a particular focus on bicycle traffic, rather than doing so only on individual streets.
Frequently asked questions
Does 50 km/h automatically apply beyond the sign?
No. Within built-up areas, a maximum of 50 km/h generally applies unless otherwise specified, but another restriction, such as a 30 km/h zone, may continue or begin.
May motor vehicles drive on again after the sign?
The traffic ban on types of traffic not permitted in the bicycle zone ends. However, whether motor vehicles may then drive there depends on further traffic signs and the general rules.
Does this sign also mark the end of a cycle path?
No. Zeichen 244.4 marks the end of the bicycle zone, but not automatically the end of a separately signposted cycle path. For an existing cycle path, its signs and physical layout are decisive.
Who has Vorfahrt at the end of the bicycle zone?
Zeichen 244.4 does not grant Vorfahrt. Traffic lights or Vorfahrt signs are decisive; if there are none at a junction or access road, the priority-to-the-right rule generally applies.
