When you see the Zeichen

Pay attention to which line is facing your lane. From lane B, on the side of the broken line, you may cross the road marking as long as this does not endanger anyone; from lane A, on the side of the solid line, you may neither cross the marking nor drive on it.

Rules

  • For vehicles in lane A, the solid line acts as a prohibition: It must neither be crossed nor driven on, even partially.
  • Vehicles in lane B may cross the marking from the side of the broken line as long as this does not endanger traffic.
  • The permission for lane B applies only in this direction; when returning across the marking, which side of the line is facing the vehicle is decisive again.
  • You must not park on the carriageway if less than 3 m of clearance remains between the parked vehicle and the solid line.

Tips

  • Remember: What matters is the line directly next to your lane, not the line on the other side of the marking.
  • Before crossing from lane B, check your mirrors, signal and perform a shoulder check, and do not endanger oncoming or following traffic.
  • Plan an overtaking or turning manoeuvre in good time; from the side of the solid line, you must not quickly switch across the marking at the last moment.
  • Assess the remaining space up to the solid line realistically when parking; less than 3 m of remaining width means Parkverbot.

Common misunderstandings

  • !The broken line is interpreted as permission for both directions of travel. In fact, only the side with the broken line directly facing it may cross the marking, provided this does not endanger anyone.
  • !Crossing from lane B is considered to be permitted without restriction. It is only allowed if this does not endanger traffic.
  • !The parking prohibition when less than 3 m of remaining width is available is overlooked because there is no additional Parkverbot sign.

Exam tip

In exam images, it is often crucial whether your vehicle is in lane A or B. So do not just look at whether a line is broken; check whether that particular broken line is facing your lane.

Did you know

Zeichen 296 combines two different effects in a single marking: On the side of the solid line, crossing is prohibited, while the marking may be crossed from the side of the broken line under certain conditions.

Frequently asked questions

May I cross the one-sided lane boundary from lane B?

Yes, if the broken line is facing your lane and this does not endanger anyone. Before changing lanes, you must carefully observe the rest of the traffic.

No. The solid line facing your lane may not be crossed or driven on, even for an overtaking manoeuvre.

That depends on which side of the line is facing you when you return. If the solid line is on your side, you may not cross the marking.

When does Zeichen 296 prohibit parking?

You must not park on the carriageway if less than 3 m of lane width remains free between your vehicle and the solid line. No additional Parkverbot sign is required for this.
