When you see the Zeichen

From this sign, the special provisions for Autobahnen no longer apply. Adjust your speed in good time to the following road, its signs and local conditions; the sign itself does not prescribe a particular maximum speed.

Rules

  • Sign 330.2 identifies the end of the Autobahn; the Autobahn rules no longer apply from its location.
  • The sign does not automatically cancel a speed limit previously ordered by traffic signs. Observe cancellation signs and the signs for the connecting road.
  • After the sign, the permitted maximum speed depends on the following type of road and further signs. On an ordinary road, outside built-up areas passenger cars without trailers are generally limited to 100 km/h, and within built-up areas generally to 50 km/h.
  • The end of the Autobahn is not the same as an exit: the carriageway may lead directly into another type of road without turning.

Tips

  • Ease off the accelerator early and expect tighter bends, intersections, traffic lights or oncoming traffic after the sign.
  • Look immediately after the sign for speed-limit signs, an Ortstafel or Kraftfahrstraßen signs, as these determine the rules that apply next.
  • When moving onto a road with oncoming traffic, pay particular attention to your position in the lane and only overtake if it is safe and permitted there.

Common misunderstandings

  • !Many learner drivers assume that 100 km/h always applies immediately after the sign. However, this depends on the road that follows, whether you are inside or outside a built-up area and any additional traffic signs.
  • !The sign is confused with the end of a speed limit. It marks the end of the Autobahn, but does not automatically end every speed limit imposed previously.
  • !Some people expect an exit to be mandatory. In fact, the Autobahn may continue straight into a Bundesstraße, Kraftfahrstraße or another road.

Exam tip

A typical exam trap is asking which speed applies after the sign. Do not simply answer 100 km/h: the decisive factors are the type of road that follows, whether you are inside or outside a built-up area and any existing speed-limit signs.

Did you know

Zeichen 330.2 shows the Autobahn symbol with red diagonal bars. It is often placed where an Autobahn directly transitions into a road with a different legal classification.

Frequently asked questions

After Zeichen 330.2, may I automatically drive at no more than 100 km/h?

No, the sign itself does not impose a maximum speed. On an ordinary road outside a built-up area, the general maximum for passenger cars without trailers is 100 km/h; on a suitably constructed Kraftfahrstraße, however, there may be no general maximum speed.

Does a posted speed limit also end when the Autobahn ends?

Not automatically. A speed restriction imposed by traffic signs ends according to the applicable cancellation or road-section rules, not merely because of Zeichen 330.2.

Does the recommended speed of 130 km/h continue to apply after the sign?

Not solely because the road was previously an Autobahn. Whether the recommended speed remains relevant depends on whether the following road is, for example, a Kraftfahrstraße with physically separated carriageways or at least two marked lanes in each direction.

Do I have to leave the Autobahn via an exit at this sign?

No. The sign may also be placed on the through carriageway to indicate that from that point onward, it is no longer legally an Autobahn.
