Compliance with the time limit is evidenced by displaying the parking disc. The parking permission applies only if the parking disc is displayed or affixed so as to be clearly legible. 4. a) A supplementary sign may restrict the parking permission in favour of car-sharing vehicles provided with a car-sharing permit. Restriction to vehicles of only one car-sharing company or to particular car-sharing companies is permissible in accordance with the Carsharing Act. The restriction is indicated by stating the corresponding company name in black lettering on a white background on a further supplementary sign. The parking permission applies only if the car-sharing permit is displayed or affixed in the vehicle so as to be clearly legible. b) Supplementary signs may exempt car-sharing vehicles from the obligation to park with a parking ticket or parking disc. If parking-ticket machines are installed, the exemption may also be indicated solely at the machine. Explanation 1. The beginning of permitted parking may be indicated by a horizontal white arrow in the sign pointing towards the carriageway, and the end by one pointing away from the carriageway. Where signs are repeated along the section, one arrowhead points towards the carriageway and the second away from it. 2. The sign with a supplementary sign bearing a black arrow indicates access to larger car parks or parking garages. The sign may also be supplemented by information indicating whether it is a parking garage.

When you see the Zeichen

Zeichen 314 marks a place or area where you may park. Immediately check Zusatzzeichen, arrows, road markings, and instructions about a parking ticket or parking disc before leaving your vehicle. Follow the specified parking rules and any time-based or personal restrictions.

Rules

  • The sign permits parking; Zusatzzeichen may restrict this permission by time, vehicle type, or to certain authorised users.
  • If a parking disc is required, you must display it clearly and set it to the next half hour after your arrival; the stated maximum parking duration must be observed.
  • A parking ticket, parking disc, residents’ parking permit, or car-sharing permit must be displayed or affixed so that it is clearly legible, insofar as it is required for permission to park.
  • A white arrow on the sign may indicate the beginning, continuation, or end of the permitted parking area: an arrow pointing towards the carriageway indicates the beginning, while one pointing away from the carriageway indicates the end.

Tips

  • Always read Zusatzzeichen from top to bottom and check exactly which times, vehicles, or groups of people they apply to.
  • Pay attention to road markings and park completely within the designated parking area.
  • When parking with a parking disc, check from outside that it is clearly visible and shows the correct arrival time.
  • At parking ticket machines, also check the instructions on the machine, as they may specify, for example, an exemption for electric or car-sharing vehicles.

Common misunderstandings

  • !Zeichen 314 is understood as unrestricted permission to park, even though Zusatzzeichen may require, for example, a parking ticket, parking disc, payment of a fee, or membership of a specific user group.
  • !Learner drivers confuse the sign with a bus stop: with Zeichen 224, parking is generally prohibited up to 15 metres before and after the sign, whereas Zeichen 314 permits parking.
  • !A parking disc is set to the exact minute or to the end of the parking period; the correct setting is the next half hour after arrival.

Exam tip

In exam questions, the Zusatzzeichen is often decisive, not just the blue P. Pay particular attention to the parking-disc symbol, maximum parking duration, time information, and restrictions for residents, people with a special parking permit, electric vehicles, or car-sharing vehicles.

Did you know

Zeichen 314 can contain arrows directly on the blue sign. These indicate the beginning, continuation, or end of a parking area; together with a Zusatzzeichen showing a black arrow, it can also point to the entrance of a larger car park or multi-storey car park.

Frequently asked questions

May I always park free of charge and without a time limit at Zeichen 314?

No. Zusatzzeichen or information on the parking ticket machine may specify fees, permitted usage times, a maximum parking duration, or a specific group of authorised users.

How do I set the parking disc correctly?

Set the pointer to the next half-hour mark after your arrival. For example, if you arrive at 10:05, set the parking disc to 10:30.

What does a wheelchair-user symbol below the sign mean?

Permission to park is restricted to severely disabled or blind people who are legally entitled to use a special parking permit. A severely disabled person’s ID card alone is not sufficient; the required parking permit must be displayed so that it is clearly legible.

May I park outside a marked parking area?

If parking spaces are marked or the signs prescribe a specific arrangement, you must follow that arrangement. The sign does not permit you to block pavements, entrances, or other unauthorised areas.
