When you see the Zeichen

Display the parking disc in the vehicle so that it is clearly legible from outside and set the indicator to the next half-hour mark after your arrival. Observe the maximum parking duration stated on the associated signs and, where applicable, the restriction to electrically powered vehicles.

Rules

  • The parking disc must be clearly readable from outside, for example behind the windscreen.
  • The indicator must be set to the half-hour mark following arrival: for arrival at 10:07, set 10:30.
  • The maximum parking duration indicated by supplementary signs must not be exceeded.
  • During parking, the arrival time may not simply be moved forward; a new parking period arises only through an actually new parking process.
  • If the parking time for electrically powered vehicles is limited, it is evidenced by displaying the parking disc.

Tips

  • Before leaving the vehicle, check that the parking disc is clearly visible and not obscured by reflections, snow or objects.
  • Read all Zusatzzeichen: they specify, in particular, the maximum parking duration, times of validity and any possible restriction to electric vehicles.
  • Remember the rule: do not set the exact minute; set it to the next half-hour mark.
  • An electronic parking disc may only be used if it meets the prescribed requirements and has been approved accordingly.

Common misunderstandings

  • !Many people set the actual arrival time, even though it must be set to the next half-hour mark.
  • !The parking-disc symbol does not mean that parking is permitted for an unlimited period or regardless of any Zusatzzeichen.
  • !Simply turning the parking disc forward after the maximum parking duration has expired does not extend the permitted parking time.

Exam tip

A typical exam trap is as follows: arrival at 14:10 with a maximum parking duration of two hours. The parking disc is set to 14:30; after the displayed parking period, parking is permitted until 16:30.

Did you know

The parking disc is standardised in the StVO as a pictogram, or Zeichen 318. What matters is not the exact arrival minute, but the next half-hour mark.

Frequently asked questions

What time do I set if I arrive at 9:35?

Set the parking disc to 10:00. The marker must be positioned at the next half-hour mark after arrival.

Where must the parking disc be placed?

It must be attached in or on the vehicle so that it is clearly legible from outside. It is usually placed clearly visible behind the windscreen.

May I turn the parking disc forward after the permitted parking time has expired?

No, this does not constitute a new parking process. The vehicle must actually leave the parking space; merely changing the displayed time is not permitted.

Does the parking-disc requirement automatically apply in a parking space for electric vehicles?

The specific signage is decisive. If the parking duration for electrically powered vehicles is restricted, it must be documented with the parking disc; the stated maximum parking duration and any other Zusatzzeichen must also be observed.
