When you see the Zeichen
The diversion arrow points to an alternative route on Autobahnen, which is recommended for use when necessary. You may follow the direction shown, but you do not have to; continue to observe all speed limits and other traffic signs.
Rules
- The sign is a route recommendation and does not require you to travel in a specific direction.
- It indicates an alternative route that can be used particularly in the event of congestion or other traffic disruptions.
- The direction of the arrow shows how the recommended alternative route continues.
- Speed limits, lane regulations and other traffic signs continue to apply regardless of the recommendation.
Tips
- Look out for further diversion arrows so that you can follow the recommended route continuously.
- Before switching to the alternative route, check traffic reports or current navigation guidance, provided this is possible without being distracted.
- Move into the correct lane in good time before the indicated exit, without making an abrupt lane change.
- Stay on your current route if you do not wish to use the recommendation; there is no need to turn spontaneously or dangerously.
Common misunderstandings
- The diversion arrow is often mistaken for a mandatory diversion. In fact, it is only a recommendation.
- Some learner drivers confuse the sign with authorisation to use the Seitenstreifen. The Seitenstreifen may only be driven on when this is specifically permitted by Zeichen 223.1.
- The alternative route is occasionally understood as cancelling existing speed limits. However, all imposed restrictions remain valid.
Exam tip
In the theory test, the typical trap is whether it is mandatory: Zeichen 467.1 recommends an alternative route but does not require you to use it.
Did you know
Diversion arrows are used primarily on the Autobahn network and can direct traffic onto an alternative Autobahn connection in the event of disruptions, without ordering a mandatory diversion.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to follow the diversion arrow?
No. The sign merely provides a route recommendation for an alternative route on Autobahnen.
When is it sensible to use the recommended route?
It can be particularly useful in the event of congestion, closures or other traffic disruptions. Current traffic reports can help you decide.
Am I allowed to use the Seitenstreifen because of the diversion arrow?
No. The Seitenstreifen may only be used as a traffic lane when it has been expressly opened for use by Zeichen 223.1.
Does the diversion arrow cancel speed limits?
No. Imposed maximum speeds and all other traffic rules continue to apply unchanged on the recommended route.
