When you see the Zeichen

You may not drive on the road marked in this way with a car, motorcycle, Kleinkraftrad or Mofa. Continue only if a Zusatzzeichen expressly exempts your vehicle or your specific reason for travelling from the prohibition.

Rules

  • The sign prohibits traffic with cars and other multi-track motor vehicles, in particular cars, lorries and motorhomes.
  • The prohibition also applies to motorcycles, including those with sidecars, as well as Kleinkrafträder and Mofas.
  • Bicycles and Pedelecs with pedal assistance up to 25 km/h are not covered by Zeichen 260.
  • Zusatzzeichen such as „Anlieger frei“ or „Land- und forstwirtschaftlicher Verkehr frei“ allow entry only for the specified group of people or purpose.

Tips

  • Remember the two symbols: a motorcycle plus a car means that both single-track and multi-track motor vehicles are prohibited.
  • Look out for the sign before turning and plan an alternative route in good time.
  • Read Zusatzzeichen in full; „Anlieger frei“ does not permit using the road as a shortcut.
  • Distinguish carefully between two-wheelers: a standard Pedelec up to 25 km/h is considered a bicycle, whereas an S-Pedelec is considered a Kleinkraftrad and may not enter.

Common misunderstandings

  • !Zeichen 260 is confused with Zeichen 250. Zeichen 250 prohibits vehicles of all kinds, whereas Zeichen 260 prohibits only the motor vehicles expressly covered by it.
  • !Some learner drivers think it is only a prohibition for cars. In fact, motorcycles, Kleinkrafträder and Mofas are also affected.
  • !A Zusatzzeichen reading „Anlieger frei“ is often understood as general permission. However, it applies only if you actually have a specific reason to access the restricted road.

Exam tip

In theory-test questions, the typical trap is a bicycle or Pedelec up to 25 km/h: it may generally pass Zeichen 260 because the sign does not impose a general prohibition on vehicles of all kinds. An S-Pedelec, on the other hand, is affected as a Kleinkraftrad.

Did you know

Zeichen 260 combines the symbols of Zeichen 251 „Verbot für Kraftwagen“ and 255 „Verbot für Krafträder“. Its scope can therefore be derived directly from the two types of vehicle shown.

Frequently asked questions

May I pass Zeichen 260 in a car?

No, the prohibition applies to cars. Entry is permitted only if a Zusatzzeichen provides for an appropriate exception.

May I continue on a bicycle?

Yes, Zeichen 260 does not prohibit bicycle traffic. However, any separately imposed prohibition on bicycle traffic or other local regulation must be observed.

May a motorcycle or Mofa enter?

No, the sign covers motorcycles, including those with sidecars, as well as Kleinkrafträder and Mofas. Without a relevant exception provided by a Zusatzzeichen, entry is prohibited.

What does the Zusatzzeichen „Anlieger frei“ below the sign mean?

Residents and other people with a specific reason to access the road may enter despite the sign, for example to visit a resident or deliver something to a property. Simply using the road as a shortcut is not sufficient.
