When you see the Zeichen

The sign marks the exit from an Autobahn. If you want to leave, use your right turn signal in good time and move onto the exit lane while checking the traffic behind you; otherwise, stay on the through lane.

Rules

  • Zeichen 332 exclusively indicates an exit from an Autobahn.
  • On its own, the sign neither prescribes a specific speed nor requires you to leave the Autobahn.
  • When moving onto the exit lane, you must not endanger traffic behind you; signal the lane change in good time.
  • Speed limits and other traffic signs in the area of the exit must be obeyed independently of Zeichen 332.
  • You must not drive over hatched areas or solid lane boundary lines when leaving the Autobahn.

Tips

  • Move into the right-hand lane early if you want to use the announced exit.
  • If possible, only reduce your speed once you are on the exit lane, unless traffic signs, the traffic situation or the road layout require otherwise.
  • Be prepared for tight curves on the exit, and remember that after a long drive on an Autobahn, you may easily underestimate your speed.
  • If you miss the exit, continue to the next exit and never turn around on the Autobahn.

Common misunderstandings

  • !The sign is confused with Zeichen 332.1: Zeichen 332 applies to Autobahn exits, while Zeichen 332.1 applies to exits from Kraftfahrstraßen or motorway-style roads.
  • !Some learner drivers mistake the sign for the end of an Autobahn. However, it only marks an exit; the through lane remains an Autobahn.
  • !The sign is mistakenly understood as a speed limit. A maximum permitted speed only follows from additional signs or the general regulations.

Exam tip

A typical exam trap is confusing it with Zeichen 332.1 or with the end of the Autobahn. Remember: Zeichen 332 marks the Autobahn exit, but it does not end the Autobahn for traffic continuing straight ahead.

Did you know

The StVO contains no separate written explanation of Zeichen 332; its meaning is derived from the official illustration and the designation „Ausfahrt von der Autobahn“. Its blue background classifies it as directional signage for Autobahnen.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to leave the Autobahn at Zeichen 332?

No. The sign merely indicates the exit; you may continue on the through lane of the Autobahn.

Does a lower maximum speed automatically apply at this sign?

No, Zeichen 332 does not set a speed limit. However, observe any additional speed-limit signs and adjust your speed, especially for curves and the available visibility at the exit.

When should I signal when leaving the Autobahn?

Use your right turn signal in good time before moving onto the exit lane. The signal does not give you Vorfahrt; you must watch the traffic behind you and must not endanger anyone.

What should I do if I miss the exit?

Continue on the Autobahn to the next suitable exit. Reversing, turning around or stopping to get back to the missed exit is prohibited on the Autobahn.
