When you see the Zeichen
The signposted detour ends here. Rejoin the regular route by following the signs to your destination; speed, Vorfahrt and direction of travel continue to be governed by the other traffic signs and traffic rules.
Rules
- Zeichen 457.2 marks only the end of a previously signposted detour.
- After this sign, the yellow detour signs for this detour no longer apply; follow the regular directional signage again.
- The sign does not cancel speed limits, no-overtaking restrictions or any other regulations.
- Zeichen 457.2 does not establish any special Vorfahrtsregel and does not require you to turn immediately.
Tips
- After passing the sign, look out early for the regular blue or yellow directional signs to your destination.
- Before changing lanes, check your mirrors and blind spot, as traffic is often redistributed when a detour ends.
- Do not assume that you will automatically rejoin the original route; check your destination or navigation route.
- Stay alert for further roadworks or detour signs, as another detour may begin immediately afterwards.
Common misunderstandings
- The sign is confused with an Autobahn or Kraftfahrstraßen exit. However, it does not announce an exit; it only ends the signposted detour route.
- Learners assume that temporary speed limits are also cancelled when the detour ends. This requires a separate sign cancelling the restriction or a clearly identifiable end of the restriction's area of application.
- Some expect the sign to prescribe a direction of travel. However, Zeichen 457.2 does not require you to turn.
Exam tip
In theory-test questions, the typical trap is to attribute an additional effect to the sign. The correct answer is: it ends the detour, but neither a speed limit nor a Vorfahrtsregel or no-overtaking restriction.
Did you know
Zeichen 457.2 is part of the yellow detour directional signage and contains no destination: its only message is that the previously marked detour route ends.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to turn at Zeichen 457.2?
No. The sign does not prescribe a direction of travel; it only indicates the end of the detour. The following directional signs, road markings and Vorschriftzeichen are the ones that apply.
Does a previously imposed speed limit end at this point?
No, not solely because of Zeichen 457.2. A speed restriction ends only according to the applicable rules, for example through a corresponding sign cancelling it or the clearly identifiable end of its area of application.
Am I automatically back on my original route after passing the sign?
Not necessarily. The detour may end at another suitable road or junction. Therefore, continue by following the regular directional signage to your destination.
How does Zeichen 457.2 differ from an exit sign?
An exit sign indicates an exit from an Autobahn, Kraftfahrstraße or a motorway-like road. Zeichen 457.2, on the other hand, only indicates that a signposted detour has ended.
