When you see the Zeichen

Use the stated destinations and follow the arrow only if it corresponds to your planned route. Move into the appropriate lane in good time and, when turning, additionally observe lane markings, traffic lights and Vorfahrt and priority rules.

Rules

  • Sign 415 indicates at a junction or intersection the direction to destinations along a federal road.
  • The direction sign does not require turning; you may also choose another permitted direction of travel.
  • The sign regulates neither Vorfahrt nor priority. Other traffic signs, traffic lights or the rule of priority to the right are decisive for this.
  • The sign indicates neither a special maximum speed nor the beginning of an Autobahn or Kraftfahrstraße.
  • The number of a federal road may be shown on the direction sign by the federal-road sign with a black number on a yellow background.

Tips

  • Pay attention early to the destination, federal road number and arrow direction so that you can get into the correct lane without changing lanes hastily.
  • Compare the stated federal road number with your planned route, as similar place names can lead in different directions.
  • Use your turn signal in good time if you want to follow the arrow by turning.
  • Despite the sign, check the Vorfahrt rule immediately before the intersection; the arrow does not give you priority.

Common misunderstandings

  • !The yellow direction sign is mistaken for a sign indicating the start of a federal road. Zeichen 415 provides directions; Zeichen 401 identifies the federal road number.
  • !Learner drivers believe they must follow the arrow. The direction sign shows a route but does not prescribe a direction of travel.
  • !The yellow design is interpreted as indicating a specific speed. Zeichen 415 does not set a maximum speed.

Exam tip

A typical exam trap is assuming that Zeichen 415 grants Vorfahrt or indicates the start of a federal road. The correct interpretation is that it only provides directions; Vorfahrt, permitted direction of travel and speed are determined by other rules or signs.

Did you know

Arrow direction signs on federal roads are part of the yellow direction signage. The sign catalogue includes separate variants for the 2 main arrow directions, for example Zeichen 415-10 for left and Zeichen 415-20 for right.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to follow the arrow on Zeichen 415?

No. You only follow it if you want to reach the stated destination or follow the indicated route; other permitted directions of travel remain possible.

Do I have Vorfahrt because of the direction sign?

No. Zeichen 415 contains no Vorfahrt regulation. Traffic lights, Vorfahrt signs or, if there are no such regulations, priority to the right are decisive.

Does a federal road automatically start at this sign?

No. Zeichen 415 is a direction sign on federal roads and not a separate sign indicating the start of one. The federal road number is identified by Zeichen 401 or shown as an integrated route symbol.

How does Zeichen 415 differ from a motorway direction sign?

Zeichen 415 is part of the yellow direction signage for federal roads. Direction signs on Autobahn generally have a blue background; therefore, Zeichen 415 alone does not indicate the start of an Autobahn.
