When you see the Zeichen

Move into the appropriate lane in good time according to the direction of the arrow if your destination is shown on the signpost. Also observe lane markings, traffic lights, and Vorfahrt and turning rules, as Zeichen 418 does not regulate these itself.

Rules

  • Zeichen 418 indicates the direction to the destinations shown on other roads.
  • The arrow indicates the continuation of the route towards the named destination, but does not require you to turn.
  • The sign neither grants Vorfahrt nor overrides existing traffic signs, road markings, or traffic-light signals.
  • Unlike Zeichen 415, Zeichen 418 does not indicate a route on a Bundesstraße with the corresponding Bundesstraße number.
  • The signpost does not indicate any speed limit.

Tips

  • Read the destination name first and then the arrow direction so that you do not follow a signpost for a different destination.
  • Move into the correct lane early without endangering other vehicles by braking abruptly or changing lanes at the last moment.
  • At the junction, also look out for mandatory directions of travel and Vorfahrt signs.
  • Do not confuse the yellow arrow signpost with the white Zeichen 419 for roads of lesser importance.

Common misunderstandings

  • !Learner drivers assume that the arrow indicates a mandatory direction of travel. However, Zeichen 418 only provides guidance to the destinations shown.
  • !The sign is confused with Zeichen 415. With Zeichen 415, the signposting refers to a Bundesstraße and may include its number on the Bundesstraße sign.
  • !Some people conclude from the signpost that they have Vorfahrt when turning. Vorfahrt is determined solely by the applicable rules, traffic lights, and traffic signs.

Exam tip

The typical trap in exam questions is to assume that the arrow has a mandatory effect. The correct interpretation is: it shows the way, but does not prescribe a direction of travel, Vorfahrt, or a specific speed.

Did you know

Zeichen 418 is part of the yellow signposting system on the German road network outside Autobahn signposting. For roads of lesser importance, the white arrow signpost Zeichen 419 is typically used instead.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to drive in the indicated direction?

No. Follow the arrow only if you want to travel to one of the destinations shown; a mandatory direction of travel is prescribed by other traffic signs or road markings.

Do I have Vorfahrt when following the arrow?

No. Zeichen 418 does not contain any Vorfahrt regulation, so you must observe traffic lights, Vorfahrt signs, and, where applicable, the rule rechts vor links.

How does Zeichen 418 differ from Zeichen 415?

Zeichen 415 is the arrow signpost on Bundesstraßen and may show a Bundesstraße number. Zeichen 418 is used for signposting on other roads.

How does Zeichen 418 differ from Zeichen 419?

Zeichen 418 is a yellow arrow signpost on other roads. Zeichen 419 is generally white and provides directions on other roads of lesser importance.
