When you see the Zeichen
Identify the schematically shown detour route at an early stage and position yourself accordingly. Then pay attention to the detour direction signs and other traffic signs, as the route diagram itself does not regulate Vorfahrt or speed.
Rules
- Zeichen 458 shows the route of a detour in simplified form.
- The diagram is not to scale; the directions, roads and destinations shown are what matters.
- If the road you have been using is closed or prohibited for your vehicle, you must choose another permitted route and may follow the detour shown.
- Vorfahrt rules, turning restrictions, speed limits and lane regulations continue to be determined by the signs and road markings installed at the location.
- The rest of the detour route is regularly confirmed by detour direction signs or continuation signs.
Tips
- Above all, memorise the first turning direction and prominent intermediate destinations shown in the diagram.
- If necessary, reduce your speed early enough so that you can take in the entire diagram without braking abruptly.
- Move into the correct lane in good time for the direction announced in the route diagram.
- After the first turn, pay close attention to the subsequent detour signs instead of relying solely on your navigation system.
Common misunderstandings
- The route diagram is mistaken for a road map drawn to scale; however, distances and curves are shown only schematically.
- Learner drivers confuse Zeichen 458 with a single direction sign. The route diagram, by contrast, shows the continuous route of a detour.
- Some people assume that the diagram also regulates Vorfahrt or speed. Only the relevant traffic signs, traffic lights and general traffic rules determine these.
Exam tip
In exam questions, the drawing should not be read as an exact road map. Pay attention to which route is closed and the order in which the diagram shows the detour; Vorfahrt or a specific maximum speed cannot be inferred from Zeichen 458 alone.
Did you know
Zeichen 458 is used especially at larger construction sites or during longer-lasting closures when the route of a detour cannot be shown clearly with a single direction arrow.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to follow the route diagram?
Zeichen 458 provides information about the route of a detour. If the original route is closed or prohibited for your vehicle, you may not continue there; another permitted route remains possible unless another instruction makes the indicated route mandatory.
Is Zeichen 458 a normal direction sign?
No. A normal direction sign mainly shows the direction to individual destinations, whereas Zeichen 458 shows a longer detour route schematically.
Are the distances and curves shown exact?
No, the diagram is not to scale. It is intended to make the junctions, directions and general route of the detour clear.
Does the route diagram override other traffic rules?
No. All existing traffic signs, traffic lights, road markings and general Vorfahrt rules continue to apply without restriction along the detour route.
