When you see the Zeichen

Identify the line with your destination early and move into the lane corresponding to the direction shown. Also pay attention to lane arrows, traffic lights, Vorfahrt signs and mandatory directions, because the signpost itself neither regulates Vorfahrt nor the speed limit.

Rules

  • Each row assigns one or more destinations to a direction of travel.
  • Several directions can be shown on a single sign or on separate signs.
  • The signpost is intended for orientation and generally does not require you to turn; the other traffic signs and road markings remain decisive.
  • The sign changes neither the maximum permitted speed nor the Vorfahrt.
  • If a destination is shown together with a road number or an Autobahn symbol, follow the direction shown to reach that route.

Tips

  • Look for your destination first and then read the associated direction arrow instead of trying to take in the entire sign while passing it.
  • Move into the correct lane in good time, but only change lanes after checking your mirrors and blind spot, and without endangering others.
  • When there are several signs, pay attention to which destinations are assigned to the same direction.
  • If you have missed the turn, continue safely and choose a new route; do not stop suddenly or drive backwards.

Common misunderstandings

  • !The signpost is confused with an arrow sign: on a signpost, destinations and directions are arranged in rows on one or more rectangular signs, whereas the arrow sign itself is shaped like an arrow.
  • !Learner drivers mistake the direction arrow for a mandatory direction. However, the sign generally only shows the way; a mandatory turn would have to be ordered by an appropriate Vorschriftzeichen.
  • !It is assumed that the signpost also regulates Vorfahrt. However, Vorfahrt is determined by traffic lights, Vorfahrt signs or the rule of priority to the right.

Exam tip

A typical exam trap is whether you must turn because of the arrow shown or whether you have Vorfahrt. Neither follows from Zeichen 434 alone; always check for additional Vorschriftzeichen and Vorfahrt signs as well as road markings.

Did you know

Zeichen 434 has a flexible layout: all directions can be combined on a single sign, but destinations assigned to the same direction may also be shown on separate signs.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to drive in the direction shown?

No. Zeichen 434 is generally a signpost, not a mandatory sign. If you want to reach the stated destination, follow the assigned direction; mandatory directions result from additional Vorschriftzeichen or road markings.

Does the signpost give me Vorfahrt?

No. Vorfahrt is determined by traffic lights, Vorfahrt signs or, if nothing else is regulated, by the rule of priority to the right.

How does Zeichen 434 differ from an arrow sign?

With a signpost, destinations and directions are shown in rows on rectangular signs. Arrow signs according to Zeichen 415 or 418, on the other hand, are themselves arrow-shaped and point directly in the respective direction.

Can Zeichen 434 consist of several signs?

Yes. The directions can be combined on a single sign, or the destinations assigned to one direction can be shown on separate signs.
