When you see the Zeichen

Read the listed destinations, Autobahn numbers and direction arrows well in advance, and decide which direction you need to follow. Move into the appropriate lane in good time, taking account of road markings and traffic behind you; avoid sudden lane changes.

Rules

  • Zeichen 449 announces the onward route to the listed destinations on an Autobahn.
  • The direction arrows show whether you need to follow the Autobahn route or drive towards a junction or exit.
  • Listed Autobahn, European or federal road numbers are for orientation and may supplement the signposted destinations.
  • The sign itself does not prescribe a speed or lane change; additional traffic signs and road markings remain decisive.

Tips

  • Do not rely only on the place name; also check the listed Autobahn number, as several destinations may sound similar.
  • Check well in advance whether your destination is straight ahead or reached via a junction, and change lanes with sufficient distance.
  • Compare the information with your planned route, but give priority to the signs if your navigation system and the traffic signs differ.
  • If you miss the correct direction, continue to the next regular exit or turning opportunity; never stop or drive backwards.

Common misunderstandings

  • !The sign is confused with Zeichen 332: Zeichen 449 is an advance direction sign for early orientation, whereas Zeichen 332 marks the exit from the Autobahn.
  • !Some learner drivers believe that a direction arrow requires them to change lanes immediately. In fact, the change must be made safely and in accordance with the road markings.
  • !The blue background is mistakenly understood as prescribing a particular speed; without an additional speed indication, Zeichen 449 does not set a speed limit.

Exam tip

In exam questions, pay attention to the sign's function: Zeichen 449 announces directions and destinations in advance. It neither marks the beginning of an Autobahn nor, by itself, the point where the exit actually branches off.

Did you know

Autobahn junctions such as exits, interchanges and motorway triangles are numbered in Germany. This junction number, shown after Zeichen 406, can make orientation on an advance direction sign even easier.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to change lanes immediately at Zeichen 449?

No. You should plan your direction of travel in advance and move into the appropriate lane in good time, but you may change lanes only without endangering others and while observing the road markings.

Does Zeichen 449 prescribe a lower speed?

No, the advance direction sign itself does not prescribe a speed. A maximum permitted speed applies only if it is set by a separate traffic sign or another rule.

How does Zeichen 449 differ from Zeichen 405?

Zeichen 449 is a direction sign with destinations and direction arrows. Zeichen 405, on the other hand, identifies an Autobahn by its Autobahn number and may appear as a route indication in direction signage.

What should I do if I miss the indicated junction?

Continue safely in your lane and take the next suitable exit or connecting route. On an Autobahn, stopping, driving backwards and turning around are generally prohibited.
