When you see the Zeichen
Use the symbol shown to check whether the route sign applies to your vehicle or load, and move into the correct position in good time for the indicated direction. Follow the designated route unless other traffic signs or mandatory traffic rules require otherwise; Zeichen 422 alone prescribes neither a speed nor Vorfahrt.
Rules
- Zeichen 422 directs a particular type of traffic, represented by a symbol, along the onward route.
- The indicated direction is intended only for the type of traffic shown, for example certain goods vehicles or heavy vehicles.
- The sign is a direction sign and, by itself, neither prohibits entry nor imposes a generally prescribed direction of travel.
- When turning, you must continue to observe traffic lights, Vorfahrt signs, lane markings, and mandatory and prohibitory signs without exception.
Tips
- First identify the vehicle symbol and check whether your vehicle actually belongs to this type of traffic.
- Look out for the direction arrow early so that you can move into the correct lane without making a sudden lane change.
- Expect further route signs for the same type of traffic along the designated route.
- Do not confuse route guidance with permission to enter a road that is otherwise closed to traffic.
Common misunderstandings
- Zeichen 422 is mistaken for a prohibition applying to the type of traffic shown. In fact, it directs this type of traffic along a route.
- Learner drivers think the arrow prescribes a direction of travel for all vehicles, like a blue mandatory sign. It applies only to the type of traffic shown and serves as route guidance.
- The sign is confused with an arrow direction sign pointing to a destination or with an exit sign, even though here the focus is not the destination but the type of traffic.
Exam tip
In theory-test questions, pay attention to the difference between route guidance and prohibition: Zeichen 422 shows a particular type of traffic a route, but does not automatically prohibit that type of traffic from taking all other directions. An actual prohibition would have to be imposed by an appropriate prohibitory sign.
Did you know
Zeichen 422 is used in different variants and can direct specific types of vehicles or loads along suitable routes, for example around industrial areas or where there are special route restrictions.
Frequently asked questions
Does Zeichen 422 apply to all vehicles?
No. It applies only to the type of traffic represented by the symbol on the sign. Other road users can normally ignore the route sign.
Do I have to follow the arrow?
Zeichen 422 is a route sign, not a blue mandatory direction-of-travel sign. Whether another route is prohibited can only be determined from additional mandatory or prohibitory signs.
Does Zeichen 422 give me Vorfahrt when I turn?
No. The sign regulates neither Vorfahrt nor priority. When turning, you must observe the traffic lights, Vorfahrt signs, and the general rules for turning.
How does Zeichen 422 differ from Zeichen 415 and Zeichen 418?
Zeichen 415 and Zeichen 418 typically point to specified places or destinations and differ according to the type of road. Zeichen 422, by contrast, focuses on a particular type of traffic represented by a symbol and shows its route.
