Extended alternative diversion
If diverted traffic cannot yet be directed back onto the motorway at the junction intended according to sign 460, this sign guides it via the next alternative diversion.

When you see the Zeichen
If you are already following a Bedarfsumleitung and see Zeichen 466, follow the indicated direction to the next Bedarfsumleitung. Returning to the Autobahn at the originally intended junction is not yet possible.
Rules
- Zeichen 466 continues to direct traffic that has already been diverted via the next Bedarfsumleitung.
- Pay attention to the arrow and the indicated number of the continuing Bedarfsumleitung.
- Do not try to return to the Autobahn at the originally intended junction if the continuation is indicated by Zeichen 466.
- The sign alone does not change Vorfahrt or the permitted maximum speed; the local traffic signs and general rules continue to apply.
Tips
- Remember the number of the Bedarfsumleitung you have been following and pay particular attention at Zeichen 466 to the change to the next number.
- Move into the appropriate lane early in line with the direction arrow, without endangering other road users.
- Follow the signposted continuation even if your navigation system is already suggesting a return to the Autobahn.
- After the sign, continue looking out for the numbered diversion signs until the return to the Autobahn is signposted.
Common misunderstandings
- Zeichen 466 is mistaken for a normal Autobahn exit. However, it does not indicate an exit; it indicates the continuation of an existing Bedarfsumleitung.
- Learner drivers believe the sign means an immediate return to the Autobahn. In fact, it indicates that returning at the intended junction is not yet possible.
- The number is mistaken for an Autobahn or federal road number. Here, it identifies the continuing Bedarfsumleitung.
Exam tip
In the exam, the trap often lies in the word “continuing”: Zeichen 466 does not mean that you can now return to the Autobahn; it means that you must follow the next Bedarfsumleitung.
Did you know
The network of Bedarfsumleitungen is permanently signposted with numbered signs, particularly along Autobahnen. Zeichen 466 connects two such diversion routes when the originally intended return to the Autobahn cannot be used.
Frequently asked questions
What exactly does Zeichen 466 mean?
It means that diverted traffic cannot yet return to the Autobahn at the originally intended junction. It is therefore directed via the next Bedarfsumleitung.
Do I have to enter the Autobahn immediately at Zeichen 466?
No. First follow the indicated continuing Bedarfsumleitung and wait for later signs directing you back to the Autobahn.
How does Zeichen 466 differ from Zeichen 460?
Zeichen 460 marks a Bedarfsumleitung. Zeichen 466 directs traffic that has already been diverted onto another Bedarfsumleitung because the planned return to the Autobahn is not yet possible.
Does Zeichen 466 specify a particular speed?
No, the sign itself does not contain a speed limit. The locally imposed maximum speeds and the general regulations apply.
