Exit marker
The sign is an exit marker and makes the course of the road or an obstacle clearer.
When you see the sign
The sign highlights the point where an exit branches off from the road ahead. Choose the correct lane in good time, follow the road markings and adjust your speed if you intend to take the exit.
Rules
- Skilt 912 marks an exit and makes the course of the road or an obstruction at the exit point clearer.
- The sign does not in itself require you to drive on a particular side; lane arrows, road markings and other traffic signs determine the direction of travel.
- You must not make a sudden or dangerous manoeuvre to catch the exit if you have already chosen the wrong lane.
- A lane change towards the exit must be signalled with the direction indicator and carried out without obstructing or endangering other road users.
Tips
- Look out for direction signs and lane arrows early, so that you are in the correct position before the exit marking.
- Pay particular attention to the area where the road divides, as the marking is often positioned at the tip of the exit.
- If you intend to take the exit, reduce your speed in a controlled manner, and only when this can be done without surprising traffic behind you.
- If you have passed the exit, continue ahead and find a safe, legal route back.
Common misconceptions
- Believing that the sign requires you to pass on a particular side, as some obstruction markings may indicate.
- Confusing the sign with a direction marking that highlights a sharp bend or a change in the road's direction.
- Believing that the marking gives you the right to cross a hatched area or a solid line to catch the exit.
Test yourself
Easy
What does the sign mean?
- AIt marks an exit and makes the road's course or an obstruction clearer.
- BIt marks an obstruction and shows which side the obstruction should be passed on.
- CIt marks that the road ends and that you must choose another direction.
- DIt marks a sharp curve and shows the change in the road's continuing direction.
Medium
You discover at the sign that you are in the wrong lane. A solid line now separates you from the exit lane. What should you do?
- AStop in the lane and wait until the exit lane is completely clear.
- BCarefully cross the solid line and drive into the exit lane.
- CContinue in the selected lane and find a safe and legal route onward.
- DQuickly change to the exit lane without signaling in order to make the exit.
Hard
Which statement about how the sign should be interpreted is correct?
- AThe sign highlights the exit point, but does not determine which side you should drive on.
- BThe design of the sign indicates which side an obstruction must always be passed on.
- CThe sign permits crossing hatched areas when the exit is approaching.
- DThe sign primarily warns of a sharp curve in the road's continuing course.
Theory test tip
In the theory test, the sign may be confused with a background, direction or obstruction marking. Look for the fact that its purpose is to highlight the actual exit point, not to warn of a bend or indicate which side an obstruction should be passed on.
Did you know
The exit marking is used especially to make the tip of an exit clear where the main road and the exit road diverge. Its primary function is visual guidance and it does not replace direction signs or road markings.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to take the exit when I see the sign?
No. The sign marks the exit, but does not require you to use it. Follow the direction signs, lane layout and road markings for the route you have chosen.
Does the sign indicate which side I should pass on?
Not in itself. The correct driving line follows from the road layout, lane markings and any other signs.
Can I cross the hatched area to catch the exit?
No, the marking does not give permission to cross a hatched area or a line that you are not legally allowed to cross. If you have gone too far, you must continue and choose another route.
What is the difference between this and a direction marking?
The exit marking highlights the point where an exit branches off from the road. A direction marking is used to make the road's onward direction, for example through a clear bend, easier to perceive.
