Tunnel marker
The sign is a tunnel marker and makes the course of the road or an obstacle clearer.
When you see the sign
Use the marking to follow the road’s alignment and to see the tunnel wall or an obstacle more clearly. Keep the correct position in your lane and adjust your speed if the tunnel curves, narrows or visibility is limited.
Rules
- Sign 914.V is a delineation sign that clarifies the road’s alignment or an obstacle in a tunnel.
- The V version is intended for marking on the left-hand side and helps the driver perceive the left boundary.
- The sign does not in itself impose any requirement, give priority, prohibit overtaking or specify a particular speed limit.
- Any traffic signs, traffic lights and lane signals in the tunnel apply independently of the tunnel marking.
Tips
- Look for more markings ahead to identify early whether the tunnel curves.
- Avoid fixing your gaze on a single marking; use it as a guide to maintain a steady position in your lane.
- Reduce your speed in a controlled manner if the marking indicates a sharp bend, narrowing or an obstacle.
- Pay extra attention when entering the tunnel while your eyes adjust to the lighting conditions.
Common misconceptions
- Assuming that the marking requires you to drive on a particular side, in the same way as an obstacle marker with diagonal stripes.
- Interpreting the sign as a warning sign that always indicates a specific obstacle immediately ahead.
- Assuming that the marking sets a separate speed limit in the tunnel.

Easy
What does this marking mean?
- AIt sets a separate speed limit for the entire tunnel.
- BIt warns of a specific obstruction directly in front of the vehicle.
- CIt requires all vehicles to pass on the left side.
- DIt clarifies the road's course or an obstruction in the tunnel.
Medium
You are driving in a tunnel and see this marking on the left side. Another sign shows a speed limit of 60 km/t. What do you do?
- AI stop immediately because the marking warns of an obstruction in the carriageway.
- BI follow the speed limit and use the marking to perceive the left boundary.
- CI disregard the speed limit because the marking overrides other signs.
- DI move into the left lane because the marking requires this.
Hard
What distinguishes this marking from a marking with diagonal stripes pointing down toward one side?
- AThis one always warns of an obstruction directly ahead, while the diagonal stripes only show the road's continuing course.
- BThis one clarifies the tunnel's boundary, while the diagonal stripes show which side the obstruction may be passed on.
- CThis one shows which side the obstruction may be passed on, while the diagonal stripes indicate the tunnel's speed limit.
- DThis one gives the driver priority in the tunnel, while the diagonal stripes require reduced speed.
Theory test tip
A common trap is confusing the marking with obstacle marker 906. The diagonal stripes on the obstacle marker point down towards the side on which the obstacle can be passed, whereas 914.V primarily clarifies the road’s alignment or an obstacle in a tunnel.
Did you know
Tunnel markings use reflective materials to make the tunnel’s boundaries and alignment easier to perceive in dark and changing light conditions. The letter V refers to the left-hand version of the marking.
Frequently asked questions
Does the sign require me to drive on a particular side?
No, the sign is a visual marking and does not by itself require you to drive in a particular direction. Follow your lane and any mandatory signs, road markings or lane signals.
Does the sign mean that there is always an obstacle ahead?
No, it can also be used simply to make the tunnel’s alignment or boundaries clearer. You should nevertheless watch out for a possible bend, narrowing or obstacle.
What does the letter V in the sign number mean?
V indicates the left-hand version. It is used to clarify the left-hand side of the road or tunnel.
Does the tunnel marking affect the speed limit?
It does not set a speed limit. You must follow the posted speed limit and always adapt your speed to visibility, the road’s curvature and other conditions in the tunnel.
