Motor traffic road (Motortrafikkveg) (503)

Motor traffic road (Motortrafikkveg)

Information Signs Sign number: 503

The sign indicates that the provisions of the traffic rules concerning motortrafikkveg apply from the sign up to sign 505 “End of motortrafikkveg”, sign 502 “Motorveg” or the junction between an exit road from motortrafikkveg and a road that is not motortrafikkveg.

When you see the sign

From this sign onward, the special traffic rules for a motor traffic road apply. Check that your vehicle is permitted to use the road, obey the posted speed limit, and avoid stopping, reversing or turning around.

Rules

  • Pedestrians, cyclists and moped riders are not allowed to use a motor traffic road.
  • Only motor vehicles or vehicle combinations that can legally be driven at a speed of at least 40 km/h on a level road may use the motor traffic road.
  • Stopping or parking on a motor traffic road is prohibited, except in a parking area or rest area. Emergency stopping is permitted when necessary.
  • Turning around, reversing or driving across a central reservation or other physical barrier is prohibited.
  • The rules apply until sign 505 «Slutt på motortrafikkveg», sign 502 «Motorveg», or an intersection between an exit road from the motor traffic road and a road that is not a motor traffic road.

Tips

  • Look for speed-limit signs; this sign does not itself indicate a specific speed limit.
  • Plan your exit early, because you cannot reverse or turn around if you pass it.
  • If your vehicle breaks down, move it completely off the carriageway if possible and warn other traffic.
  • Be prepared for the motor traffic road to have a different design from a motorway, including not having a physical central reservation.

Common misconceptions

  • !Many people think the sign automatically means 110 km/h. The speed limit is determined by speed-limit signs and the general speed limits.
  • !Some people confuse a motor traffic road with a motorway. A motor traffic road may have a simpler design and does not need to have physically separated directions of travel.
  • !Some people think the rules always continue until sign 505. They may also end at sign 502 or at the specified intersection on an exit road.
