Mandatory direction of travel

Mandatory Signs Sign number: 402.7

The sign indicates that drivers shall leave the intersection in the direction indicated on the sign.

When you see the sign

You must either continue straight ahead or turn left at the junction. You are not allowed to turn right.

Rules

  • You must choose one of the two directions shown by the arrows: straight ahead or left.
  • Turning right is prohibited where the sign applies.
  • The sign does not give you priority; you must still follow give-way rules, traffic lights and other traffic regulations.
  • If you are turning left, you must position yourself correctly and signal well in advance.

Tips

  • Look out for the sign early and choose the correct lane before entering the junction.
  • When turning left, check for oncoming traffic, cyclists and pedestrians.
  • If you are continuing straight ahead, avoid positioning yourself in a lane intended only for left turns.
  • If your planned right turn is prohibited, you must continue straight ahead or turn left and find another legal route.

Common misconceptions

  • !Some people think that the arrow pointing left means turning left is the only permitted direction, but continuing straight ahead is also allowed.
  • !Some people confuse the sign with the sign requiring you to drive straight ahead or turn right, overlooking which way the diagonal arrow points.
  • !Some people think that the sign gives priority at the junction, but it only regulates which directions you may drive.

Did you know

Mandatory signs are generally round, with a blue background and a white symbol. The combination of two arrows makes it possible to allow two directions of travel while closing off the third—in this case, turning right.

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn right if the road is clear?

No. Turning right is not one of the directions permitted by the sign, even if there is no other traffic.

Do I have to turn left?

No. You can choose between continuing straight ahead and turning left.

Do I have priority when following the arrows?

No. The sign determines the direction of travel, but does not change the give-way rules. You must follow traffic lights, give-way signs and other give-way rules.

Do I have to use my turn signal if I choose left?

Yes, you must signal when turning left. If you continue straight ahead, you should normally not signal.
