Arrow signal (1082.h)

Arrow signal

Traffic Signals Sign number: 1082.h

The signal applies to those who wish to drive in the direction indicated by the arrow. An arrow signal may have one, two or three light apertures.

When you see the sign

Position yourself in the correct lane and follow the arrow signal if you intend to turn right. Stop at a red light, and proceed on a green arrow only when the road is clear and the turn can be made safely.

Rules

  • The arrow signal applies only to traffic travelling in the direction shown by the arrow, here to the right.
  • A red arrow means that you must not pass the signal or stop line to turn right.
  • A red and yellow arrow at the same time warns that the signal will shortly change to a green arrow, but you must remain stationary.
  • A green arrow allows you to pass the signal to the right when the road is clear, but it does not exempt you from the duty to consider other road users.
  • A yellow arrow on its own warns that the signal is changing to red. You must stop unless you have proceeded so far that stopping cannot be done safely.

Tips

  • Check whether the right turn is controlled by a separate arrow signal, rather than just by the main signal beside it.
  • Stop before the stop line when there is a red arrow, even if there is no other traffic.
  • Check the pedestrian crossing, cycle crossing and the area to your right before turning.
  • Do not start driving when the red and yellow arrows are lit at the same time; wait until the green arrow appears.

Common misconceptions

  • !Believing that you are allowed to turn right on a red arrow when the junction appears to be empty.
  • !Following a green main signal even though your lane or the right turn has a red arrow.
  • !Confusing the arrow signal with a yellow arrow in a lane signal, which warns that a lane will be closed and requires you to change lanes.

Theory test tip

Several signals may be shown at the same time in the theory test. First determine which signal applies to your intended direction of travel: if you are turning right, follow the right-pointing arrow, not a green main signal or an arrow for another direction.

Did you know

A right-pointing arrow signal can have one, two or three light openings. It is used to regulate right-turning traffic separately from traffic travelling straight ahead or turning left.

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn right on a red arrow if the junction is empty?

No. A red arrow means that you must not pass the signal or stop line in the direction of the arrow, even if you cannot see any other traffic.

What does a green arrow pointing right mean?

You may pass the signal and drive to the right if the road is clear. You must still drive carefully and consider, among others, pedestrians and cyclists.

What should I do when the yellow arrow is lit on its own?

You must stop because the signal is about to change to red. You may continue only if you have proceeded so far that stopping cannot be done safely.

What is the difference between a right-pointing arrow signal and a yellow arrow in a lane signal?

A right-pointing arrow signal regulates traffic through a junction in the direction to the right. A yellow arrow in a lane signal means that the lane will be closed and that you must change lanes immediately in the direction of the arrow.
