Table direction sign
When you see the sign
Read the destinations, road numbers and direction arrows early, and choose the correct direction before entering the junction. Position yourself according to any road markings and other signs, but remember that the tabellvegviser itself does not regulate right of way or require you to use a specific lane.
Rules
- A tabellvegviser shows several destinations and driving directions together in a table at a junction.
- Arrows, road numbers and destinations indicate which road or direction to follow to reach the relevant destination.
- The sign is a direction sign and does not give priority; right of way is determined by priority signs, traffic lights, road markings or the traffic rules.
- Colour panels and symbols may provide additional information about, among other things, the type of road, local destinations or special destinations.
- You must follow lane arrows, mandatory signs and other regulations even if your desired destination is shown on the tabellvegviser.
Tips
- Find your destination first, then read the arrow and, if applicable, the road number shown on the same line or panel.
- Reduce your speed if necessary so that you have time to read the entire table without changing lanes abruptly.
- Move into the correct lane as early as road markings and traffic conditions allow.
- If you realise too late that you are in the wrong direction, continue legally through the junction and find a safe place to correct your route.
Common misconceptions
- Assuming that the tabellvegviser gives you priority in the direction indicated by the arrow.
- Confusing it with a tabellorienteringstavle: The orientation sign provides advance warning and an overview before the junction, while the tabellvegviser is used for direction guidance at the junction itself.
- Assuming that each line in the table always corresponds to a specific lane; this must instead be indicated by lane arrows, road markings or a lane direction sign.
Test yourself
Easy
What does this sign mean?
- AIt gives forkjørsrett (priority right of way) in the directions shown by the arrows.
- BIt shows several destinations and directions of travel together at a junction.
- CIt shows which lanes you must use on the approach to a junction.
- DIt gives advance warning of how an upcoming junction is laid out.
Medium
Your destination is shown straight ahead, but the lane you are in has an arrow requiring a left turn. You cannot change lanes in a safe and lawful manner. What should you do?
- AChange lanes immediately because the road guidance takes precedence over the road markings.
- BDrive straight ahead because the destination is shown in this direction.
- CTurn left and find another lawful route to the destination.
- DStop in the lane and wait until you can change lanes.
Hard
Four destinations are shown on separate lines, and the road has four lanes approaching the junction. What can you determine from this sign alone?
- AEach line shows a destination and the direction you should follow to it.
- BEach line shows the lane that has forkjørsrett (priority right of way) through the junction.
- CEach line shows the destination to which the corresponding lane leads.
- DEach line shows the order in which the lanes must pass through the junction.
Theory test tip
A typical trap is to interpret the sign as a mandatory or priority sign. In the theory test, you should answer that the sign provides direction guidance, while lane choice and right of way are determined by road markings, traffic lights, regulatory signs and the general traffic rules.
Did you know
The tabellvegviser brings several directions together on one sign and is particularly useful at junctions where several destinations and road numbers need to be shown at the same time. It differs from a standard direction sign, which normally shows one direction on a separate arrow-shaped or direction-specific panel.
Frequently asked questions
What does a tabellvegviser show?
It shows destinations and directions together in table form at a junction. It may also show road numbers, symbols and other information to help you choose the correct road.
What is the difference between a tabellvegviser and a tabellorienteringstavle?
The tabellorienteringstavle is normally placed before the junction and prepares you for the route choices ahead. The tabellvegviser provides direction guidance at the junction itself.
Does the arrow mean that I have priority?
No. The arrow only shows the direction to the destination; it says nothing about right of way or priority.
Does the tabellvegviser show which lane I should use?
Not necessarily. You must check lane arrows, road markings and any lane direction signs or portal direction signs to find the correct lane.
