Stop (204)

Stop

Give Way and Priority Signs Sign number: 204

The sign indicates that drivers must come to a complete stop before driving onto an intersecting road or before crossing a level crossing, and that the driver has vikeplikt to traffic travelling in both directions on the intersecting road or that the driver must give way to a tram or railway train at the intersecting level crossing. The stop must be made in front of and immediately before the stop line, or, if there is no stop line, as close to the intersecting road as possible.

When you see the sign

You must bring the vehicle to a complete stop in front of and immediately before the stop line. If there is no stop line, stop as close to the intersecting road as possible, then give way to traffic from both directions or give way to trams and railway trains at a level crossing.

Rules

  • A complete stop is mandatory, even if the intersection appears empty and you have good visibility.
  • If there is a stop line, you must stop in front of and immediately before it.
  • If there is no stop line, stop as close to the intersecting road as possible without creating a hazard or obstructing traffic.
  • After stopping, you must give way to vehicular traffic from both directions on the intersecting road. At a level crossing, you must give way to trams and railway trains.

Tips

  • Brake early and smoothly so that the car comes to a complete stop in the correct place.
  • Look for the stop line before approaching the intersection; it may be worn, partly obscured or located some distance before the intersection itself.
  • If visibility is poor from the stop line, stop correctly there first, then proceed carefully until you can see, while still complying with the give-way requirement.

Common misconceptions

  • !Simply slowing down and rolling on because there does not appear to be any traffic.
  • !Stopping after the stop line or out in the intersecting road to get a better view.
  • !Thinking that a complete stop cancels the give-way requirement; you must still wait until you can proceed without obstructing or disturbing the traffic you must give way to.

Theory test tip

In the theory test, the common trap is the difference between sign 202 «Give Way» and sign 204 «Stop»: Both require you to give way, but only sign 204 requires you to come to a complete stop, even when the road is empty.

Did you know

The sign’s octagonal shape makes it possible to recognise it from behind or when the text is difficult to see. This distinctive shape is used precisely because the requirement to make a complete stop is particularly important.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to stop when there is no other traffic?

Yes. You must always come to a complete stop in the correct place, regardless of the amount of traffic or visibility.

Where should I stop when there is a stop line?

You must stop in front of and immediately before the stop line. You must not position the car on the line or pass it before making the mandatory stop.

What should I do if I cannot see the intersection from the stop line?

First, come to a complete stop in front of and immediately before the stop line. You may then proceed very carefully to get a better view, but you must still give way.

Is this sign the same as an ordinary give-way sign?

No. Both signs require you to give way to traffic on the intersecting road, but this sign also requires you to make a complete stop.
