When you see the Zeichen

Reduce your speed in good time so that you can safely drive through both consecutive bends and stop within the distance you can see. Check the symbol to see whether the double bend begins to the left or right, and expect oncoming traffic as well as changing road grip.

Rules

  • The sign warns of two bends occurring immediately one after the other or within a short distance; the direction shown indicates the course of the first bend.
  • Adjust your speed to the visibility, bend radius, road conditions, traffic and load; the sign itself does not prescribe a specific maximum speed.
  • Especially on bends with limited visibility, stay in your lane and do not cut across the centre of the road.
  • Overtaking is not automatically prohibited by Zeichen 105, but it is only permitted if the entire overtaking distance, including the area needed for oncoming traffic, is fully visible.
  • Outside geschlossene Ortschaften, the Gefahrzeichen is generally placed 150 to 250 metres before the hazard; a different distance may be indicated by a Zusatzzeichen.

Tips

  • Brake before the first bend to an appropriate speed and avoid heavy braking in the middle of the bend.
  • Look ahead early towards the rest of the bends without fixating on the edge of the road, guide posts or oncoming traffic.
  • Expect the direction to change immediately after the first bend and do not accelerate too soon.
  • In wet conditions or with leaves, snow or dirt on the road, steer, brake and accelerate as smoothly as possible.

Common misunderstandings

  • !The sign is confused with Zeichen 103 “bend”; however, Zeichen 105 warns of at least two consecutive bends.
  • !Learner drivers misinterpret the symbol’s first deviation. It shows the direction in which the first bend leads.
  • !Some assume that the sign automatically imposes a specific speed or an overtaking ban. Neither is the case without additional traffic signs.

Exam tip

In theory-test questions, it is often crucial to read the direction of the first bend correctly from the symbol. Another common trap is assuming that the hazard is over after the first bend; in fact, you must immediately expect the bend in the opposite direction.

Did you know

Zeichen 105 exists in two mirror-image versions: Zeichen 105-10 warns of a double bend that initially leads to the left, while Zeichen 105-20 warns of a double bend that initially leads to the right.

Frequently asked questions

What speed applies at Zeichen 105?

The sign does not set a fixed maximum speed. You must drive slowly enough to remain in safe control of the vehicle and stop within the distance you can see; a specific speed limit applies only if it is additionally imposed.

May I overtake in the area of a double bend?

Zeichen 105 does not itself prohibit overtaking. However, because visibility is usually restricted, overtaking is often prohibited because a risk to oncoming traffic cannot be ruled out or the entire overtaking distance is not visible.

How does Zeichen 105 differ from Zeichen 103?

Zeichen 103 warns of a single bend. Zeichen 105 announces two or more closely spaced bends with a change of direction.

Does the symbol show the exact course of all the bends?

The symbol reliably indicates above all the direction of the first bend. It is not a true-to-scale representation of the bends’ radii, length or distance from one another.
