Intersection or junction
Intersection or junction with Vorfahrt from the right

When you see the Zeichen
Reduce your speed and pay particular attention to traffic from the right. Approach the junction or side road slowly enough that you can Vorfahrt gewähren to a vehicle coming from the right in good time and stop if necessary.
Rules
- At the announced junction or side road, the general rule is right before left.
- Vehicles coming from the right have Vorfahrt; you generally have priority over vehicles coming from the left.
- Zeichen 102 is a Gefahrzeichen and does not generally require you to yield to traffic in your direction of travel.
- Outside geschlossene Ortschaften, the Gefahrzeichen is generally placed 150 to 250 metres before the hazard; a Zusatzzeichen may indicate a different distance.
- The Vorfahrt rule applies only at the announced junction or side road and not automatically at any further side roads.
Tips
- Look out early for poorly visible roads or side roads on the right.
- Take your foot off the accelerator and be ready to brake if your view to the right is restricted.
- Also watch out for cyclists and other narrow vehicles approaching from the right, as they can easily be overlooked.
- Even though you have Vorfahrt over traffic from the left, expect other road users to make mistakes and drive defensively.
Common misunderstandings
- The black cross is mistakenly understood as indicating that your own road has Vorfahrt. In fact, it announces right before left.
- Some learner drivers only watch traffic from the right and forget that vehicles from the left may fail to respect their Vorfahrt.
- The sign is confused with Zeichen 101; Zeichen 102 specifically indicates a junction or side road where traffic from the right has Vorfahrt.
Exam tip
In exam questions, the typical trap is to interpret the sign as a Vorfahrt sign. Choose answers stating that you are ready to brake and will Vorfahrt gewähren to traffic from the right; the sign does not mean that you have Vorfahrt over all other road users.
Did you know
Zeichen 102 shows a black, equal-armed cross inside a red warning triangle. It is used particularly where a junction or side road with right before left cannot be recognised clearly or in good time.
Frequently asked questions
Do I always have to stop at Zeichen 102?
No. However, you must adjust your speed so that you can Vorfahrt gewähren to a vehicle coming from the right and stop in good time if necessary.
Do I have Vorfahrt over vehicles coming from the left?
Generally, yes, because right before left applies and, from their perspective, you are coming from the right. Nevertheless, do not rely on other road users respecting your Vorfahrt.
Does Zeichen 102 override an existing traffic light or other Vorfahrt signs?
No. Traffic lights and traffic signs regulating Vorfahrt take precedence over the general rule of right before left. Zeichen 102 is used for a junction or side road where precisely this general Vorfahrt rule applies.
Does right before left also apply when exiting via a lowered kerb?
No. Anyone entering the carriageway via a lowered kerb must rule out endangering others and does not have priority under the right-before-left rule. Zeichen 102, on the other hand, announces a genuine junction or side road where traffic from the right has Vorfahrt.
