When you see the Zeichen

Reduce your speed and check whether you have to wait because of a Vorfahrt rule or another requirement. If you are required to wait, you should wait at the waiting line; if the intersection is clear, you do not have to stop solely because of the line.

Rules

  • The waiting line advises anyone who is required to wait to wait at this point.
  • The marking alone does not create an obligation to wait; this results, for example, from Zeichen 205 “Vorfahrt gewähren” or another Vorfahrt rule.
  • You may cross the waiting line if you do not have to wait and the road ahead is clear.
  • If you cannot see far enough from the waiting line, you may cautiously move forward to a suitable position with a clear view, without endangering or obstructing road users with Vorfahrt.
  • Unlike at a stop line, the waiting line does not by itself require you to come to a complete stop.

Tips

  • Look around the waiting line for Zeichen 205, traffic lights or other indications of who is required to wait.
  • Brake early and, if you are required to wait, stop before the marking if possible so that you do not protrude into a cycle lane or the intersection.
  • Pay particular attention to crossing bicycle traffic when the waiting line is placed before a cycle route.
  • Do not confuse the broken waiting line with the solid stop line.

Common misunderstandings

  • !Learner drivers come to a complete stop at every waiting line even when there is no traffic. The waiting line alone does not require a stop.
  • !The waiting line is confused with the stop line, where stopping is mandatory because of an additional stop requirement.
  • !Some drivers move forward into the intersection and block a crossing cycle lane, even though they should have waited at the waiting line.

Exam tip

In examination images, pay attention to the difference between a broken waiting line and a solid stop line: Zeichen 341 indicates the waiting location for anyone required to wait, while Zeichen 294, in conjunction with a stop requirement, requires the driver to stop.

Did you know

The waiting line is a broken white transverse line. It is often marked where the appropriate waiting point needs to be made clear, for example before intersections, junctions or crossing cycle routes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I always have to come to a complete stop at a waiting line?

No. The waiting line alone does not require a stop; it indicates the waiting location for anyone required to wait. You must stop if the traffic situation or another requirement calls for it.

May I drive beyond the waiting line if I cannot see anything from there?

Yes, you may cautiously move forward to a position with a sufficient view. However, you must not endanger or obstruct road users with Vorfahrt or crossing traffic.

What is the difference between a waiting line and a stop line?

The waiting line is broken and indicates where you should wait when you are required to do so. The stop line is solid and, together with a stop requirement, requires you to stop at that point.

Does the waiting line indicate who has Vorfahrt?

No. Who has to wait is determined by traffic signs, traffic lights or the general Vorfahrt rules. The waiting line merely marks the recommended waiting point.
