When you see the Zeichen

From this sign, a restricted no-stopping zone begins. You may generally stop there for no more than three minutes; longer only for boarding or alighting or for prompt loading or unloading, or where other signs permit parking.

Rules

  • The restricted no-stopping rule applies throughout the marked zone on all public traffic areas.
  • Without an exception or special permission, you may stop for no more than three minutes.
  • For boarding or alighting and for loading or unloading, stopping may last longer than three minutes if the activity is carried out without avoidable delay.
  • Differing traffic signs or traffic devices within the zone take precedence over the zone regulation.
  • Zusatzzeichen may permit parking in marked areas, for example for residents with a parking permit or with a parking ticket or parking disc; the respective proof must be displayed or affixed so that it is clearly legible.

Tips

  • Look out for Zusatzzeichen as soon as you enter the zone, as they may specify times, user groups or permitted parking areas.
  • Only use areas that are explicitly designated for parking by signs or road markings.
  • Remember the zone sign when entering, as the rule does not have to be repeated on every road within the zone.
  • When loading or unloading, check that goods are actually being moved continuously; merely waiting does not count as a loading operation.

Common misunderstandings

  • !Many learner drivers believe that the prohibition applies only to the side of the road where the sign is installed. In fact, it generally covers all public traffic areas throughout the entire zone.
  • !The sign is confused with an absolute Haltverbot. Briefly stopping for up to 3 minutes is generally permitted here.
  • !Switching on the Warnblinkanlage or making a quick purchase does not turn prohibited parking into permitted loading or unloading.

Exam tip

In exam questions, it is often crucial that the 3-minute limit does not apply to actually getting in or out of the vehicle or to prompt loading and unloading. Shopping, making a private visit or merely waiting for someone, on the other hand, does not count as an exception.

Did you know

Zeichen 290.1 is often installed at entrances to larger areas such as city centres or residential neighbourhoods. This means that the restricted Haltverbot does not have to be repeated with Zeichen 286 on every individual road.

Frequently asked questions

When does the restricted Haltverbot zone end?

It generally ends at Zeichen 290.2 “Ende eines eingeschränkten Haltverbots für eine Zone”. Individual traffic signs or traffic devices within the zone may establish different rules.

Am I allowed to wait in the car for 3 minutes in the zone?

Yes, you may generally stop for up to 3 minutes, provided there is no stricter local regulation. If you leave the vehicle or stop for longer than 3 minutes, this is generally considered parking.

Am I allowed to remain stopped for longer than 3 minutes when unloading?

Yes, if goods are actually being loaded or unloaded and the process takes place without avoidable interruptions. Waiting afterwards or going shopping is not covered by this exception.

Am I allowed to park in a marked parking area within the zone?

Only if the signs or another traffic regulation permit parking there. Required parking tickets, parking discs or resident parking permits must be displayed or attached so that they are clearly legible.
