When you see the Zeichen
Stop on the carriageway for no more than three minutes. You may remain longer only for immediate boarding or alighting or for loading or unloading; these activities must be carried out without delay.
Rules
- The restricted no-stopping rule generally applies on the side of the road on which the sign is installed.
- You may stop there for no more than three minutes if you are not stopping the vehicle for boarding or alighting or for loading or unloading.
- For boarding or alighting, you may stop for longer than three minutes if the activity is carried out without unnecessary delay.
- Actual loading or unloading may also take longer than three minutes, but must proceed promptly and without avoidable interruptions.
- A Zusatzzeichen or directional arrows may determine the spatial or temporal area of application of the no-stopping rule.
Tips
- Pay attention to directional arrows: An arrow pointing towards the carriageway generally marks the beginning, while an arrow pointing away from the carriageway marks the end of the prohibition.
- Always check Zusatzzeichen before stopping, for example for time restrictions or exceptions for certain vehicles.
- When loading or unloading, stay in the immediate vicinity and carry out the activity visibly and without taking care of private errands.
- When waiting for someone, use an authorised parking space if it is not certain that they can get in immediately.
Common misunderstandings
- The sign is confused with the absolute Haltverbot. Zeichen 286 has a red diagonal bar; Zeichen 283 has a red cross and generally prohibits stopping altogether.
- Many people believe that three minutes are always permitted. If you leave your vehicle or stop for longer than three minutes, you are generally parking, unless someone is getting in or out immediately or goods are being loaded or unloaded.
- Simply waiting for someone does not automatically count as getting in. If the person is not yet ready to leave, the permitted brief stop can become unauthorised parking.
Exam tip
In exam questions, the three-minute limit is a common trap: If you stop for longer than three minutes, you are generally parking. However, getting in or out immediately, as well as prompt loading or unloading, may take longer than three minutes.
Did you know
Zeichen 286 is often colloquially called „Parkverbot“. Legally, it is called „Eingeschränktes Haltverbot“ because brief stopping, as well as immediate getting in or out and loading or unloading, remains permitted under the stated conditions.
Frequently asked questions
May I wait in my car for three minutes in an eingeschränktes Haltverbot?
Yes, stopping for up to three minutes is generally permitted. If the wait lasts longer, it is generally considered parking and therefore a violation.
May I let someone get in there?
Yes, immediate getting in or out is permitted and may take longer than three minutes if necessary. Unnecessary waiting for someone who is not yet ready to leave is not covered by this exception.
May I unload shopping in an eingeschränktes Haltverbot?
Yes, provided that goods are actually being loaded or unloaded and the process takes place without delay. Going shopping afterwards or taking care of another private errand is no longer part of the loading activity.
Does the sign also apply on the opposite side of the road?
No, the Haltverbot generally applies only on the side of the road where the sign is located. Separate signage is required for the opposite side.
