End of the prescribed minimum speed
The sign may be integrated into a lane board or narrowing board. In that case, the sign applies only to the respective lane for which the prescribed minimum speed had previously been prescribed.

When you see the Zeichen
From this sign onward, the previously prescribed minimum speed no longer applies. You may drive more slowly after it if traffic, road, visibility or weather conditions require it, but you should not brake suddenly and without reason.
Rules
- Zeichen 279 only cancels the previously imposed minimum speed.
- After the sign, you may drive below the previous minimum speed; a general or posted maximum speed still applies.
- You must not drive so slowly without a valid reason that you obstruct the flow of traffic.
- If Zeichen 279 is integrated into a lane or lane-reduction sign, it applies only to the lane for which the minimum speed was previously prescribed.
Tips
- Reduce your speed only when necessary, and not merely because the minimum speed no longer applies.
- Watch for subsequent speed restrictions, bends, descents or lane changes.
- With a lane sign, check carefully which lane the sign applies to.
- Keep a sufficient distance before braking and monitor traffic behind you.
Common misunderstandings
- The sign is confused with the end of a permitted maximum speed. However, Zeichen 279 ends a minimum speed.
- Some learner drivers believe they must slow down immediately at the sign. In fact, they may maintain their previous speed.
- When it is integrated into a lane sign, it is often overlooked that the rule ends only for the applicable lane.
Exam tip
In exam images, pay attention to the basic colour: Zeichen 279 indicates the end of a minimum speed and is based on the blue minimum-speed sign. A typical trap is confusing it with Zeichen 278, which indicates the end of a permitted maximum speed.
Did you know
Zeichen 279 can be integrated directly into a lane or lane-reduction sign. This makes it possible to end a prescribed minimum speed specifically for just one lane.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to drive more slowly after Zeichen 279?
No. The sign merely allows you to drive below the previously prescribed minimum speed; it does not require you to reduce your speed.
Does Zeichen 279 specify a maximum speed?
No. It only ends the minimum speed. Any maximum speeds already in force and the obligation to adapt your speed continue to apply.
May I drive as slowly as I like after the sign?
No. Without a valid reason, you must not drive so slowly that you obstruct the flow of traffic. However, driving more slowly may be necessary in poor visibility, icy conditions or heavy traffic.
Who does Zeichen 279 apply to when it appears on a lane sign?
It then applies only to the applicable lane where a minimum speed was previously prescribed. A separate rule may continue to apply in other lanes.
