When you see the Zeichen

After passing sign 280, the no-overtaking rule previously prescribed by sign 276 has ended. Nevertheless, overtake only if this is permitted under the general traffic rules and oncoming traffic, visibility, road markings and other traffic signs allow it.

Rules

  • Sign 280 ends exclusively the no-overtaking rule for motor vehicles prescribed by sign 276.
  • The no-overtaking rule ends only at the location of the sign; a prohibited overtaking manoeuvre must not be started before then.
  • A prescribed speed restriction is not lifted by sign 280.
  • Other no-overtaking rules remain in force, for example those resulting from a continuous lane boundary, another traffic sign or the general overtaking rules.
  • Even after the sign, overtaking is permitted only if any obstruction or endangerment is excluded throughout the entire manoeuvre.

Tips

  • After passing the sign, check the visibility and oncoming traffic before attempting to overtake.
  • Check whether a solid line or another no-overtaking restriction still prohibits moving out to overtake.
  • Before moving out, check your interior and exterior mirrors as well as your blind spot, and signal the lane change in good time.
  • Keep a sufficient lateral distance when overtaking, especially from cyclists, pedestrians and Elektrokleinstfahrzeuge.

Common misunderstandings

  • !The sign is confused with Zeichen 282. Zeichen 280 only ends the no-overtaking restriction, whereas Zeichen 282 ends all previously imposed route-specific speed restrictions and no-overtaking restrictions.
  • !Learner drivers believe that overtaking is automatically permitted after the sign. However, an unclear traffic situation, oncoming traffic, insufficient visibility or road markings may still prohibit it.
  • !Some people assume that Zeichen 280 also cancels a speed limit. However, a speed restriction continues to apply independently.

Exam tip

Exam questions often also specify a speed limit. Zeichen 280 does not end it; the correct answer is therefore that the no-overtaking restriction ends, but the speed limit continues to apply.

Did you know

The sign shows the two vehicle symbols from the previous no-overtaking sign in grey and crosses them out diagonally. It is often placed at the end of bends, crests or other sections of road with poor visibility where a no-overtaking restriction was previously imposed.

Frequently asked questions

May I overtake immediately after Zeichen 280?

Yes, once you have passed the sign, provided no other rule prohibits overtaking. Visibility, oncoming traffic, road markings and the traffic situation must allow the overtaking manoeuvre to be carried out safely.

Does Zeichen 280 also cancel a speed limit?

No. Zeichen 280 only ends the previously imposed no-overtaking restriction; a speed limit remains in force until it is cancelled separately or ends in another way.

What is the difference between Zeichen 280 and Zeichen 282?

Zeichen 280 only ends the no-overtaking restriction for motor vehicles. Zeichen 282, on the other hand, indicates the end of all previously imposed route-specific speed restrictions and no-overtaking restrictions.

May I cross a solid line to overtake after Zeichen 280?

No. The end of the no-overtaking restriction does not cancel a solid lane boundary; as a rule, it must not be crossed when moving out to overtake or moving back into the lane.
