Prescribed minimum speed
Regulatory or prohibitory sign Anyone driving a vehicle must not drive slower than the indicated minimum speed unless road, traffic, visibility or weather conditions require this. It prohibits the use of a lane so marked by vehicles that cannot or may not travel that fast. Explanation The sign may be integrated into a lane board or widening board. In that case, the prescribed minimum speed applies only to the respective lane for which the minimum speed has been prescribed.

When you see the Zeichen
You must drive at least at the speed shown in the blue circle, as long as the road, traffic, visibility and weather conditions allow it. If you need to drive more slowly, for example because of a traffic jam, icy conditions, fog or a hazard, this is permitted. If your vehicle cannot or may not reach the minimum speed, you may not use the correspondingly marked lane.
Rules
- The number indicates the mandatory minimum speed in km/h.
- Voluntarily driving below the minimum speed is prohibited; compelling reasons such as heavy traffic, poor visibility, icy conditions or the condition of the road permit slower driving.
- The sign does not cancel an applicable maximum speed. The minimum and maximum speeds must both be observed.
- If Zeichen 275 is integrated into a lane-assignment or widening sign, the minimum speed applies only to the assigned lane.
- Vehicles that cannot or may not reach the indicated speed due to their design or other regulations may not use the marked lane.
Tips
- Check early whether your vehicle can reach the indicated speed safely and legally.
- Do not accelerate at all costs: In traffic jams, icy conditions, fog or unclear traffic situations, a safe and appropriate speed takes priority.
- On lane signs, pay close attention to which lanes the arrows refer to, because the minimum speed may apply only to a specific lane.
- Recognise the sign by the blue circle with a white number; a maximum speed, by contrast, is shown in a white circle with a red border.
Common misunderstandings
- The number is confused with a permitted maximum speed. Zeichen 275, however, generally requires you to drive at least at the indicated speed.
- Learner drivers believe they must accelerate even in snow, fog or traffic jams. In such conditions, you may and, if necessary, must drive more slowly.
- The sign is understood as permission to exceed a lower posted maximum speed. A minimum speed never overrides other speed limits.
Exam tip
In exam questions, the typical trap is poor weather, visibility or traffic conditions: The minimum speed does not have to be maintained when the circumstances require you to drive more slowly.
Did you know
Zeichen 275 can be integrated directly into a lane-assignment or widening sign. This makes it possible, for example, to prescribe a minimum speed for only one specific lane.
Frequently asked questions
Must I always drive at least at the indicated speed when I see Zeichen 275?
No. If there are compelling reasons such as a traffic jam, icy conditions, fog, a poor road surface or a specific hazard, you may and must reduce your speed accordingly.
May I exceed an applicable maximum speed because of the minimum speed?
No. Zeichen 275 cancels neither a posted maximum speed nor the general speed regulations. Both requirements must be observed at the same time.
What applies if my vehicle cannot or may not reach the indicated speed?
In that case, you may not use the lane marked in this way. This applies both to the vehicle's technical limitations and to legally prescribed speed restrictions for its type of vehicle.
Does a minimum speed shown on a lane-assignment sign apply to the entire carriageway?
No. In this case, it applies only to the lane assigned the sign by the board. The arrows and the exact position of the sign are therefore decisive.
