Dangerous bend (100.1)

Dangerous bend

Warning Signs Sign number: 100.1

The sign warns of a dangerous bend to the right.

When you see the sign

Reduce your speed before the bend if necessary, and position the vehicle so that you remain in full control through a dangerous right-hand bend. Assess visibility, road grip and oncoming traffic, and be prepared for the bend to be sharper than it first appears.

Rules

  • Skilt 100.1 warns of one dangerous bend to the right.
  • You must adjust your speed so that you can stop within the section of road you can see, including while in the bend.
  • You must keep sufficiently far to the right and must not cut across into the oncoming lane.
  • The sign does not by itself indicate a specific speed limit; the posted speed limit still applies, but conditions may require a significantly lower speed.

Tips

  • Brake before you start turning so that the car remains stable through the right-hand bend.
  • Look well ahead through the bend, while also checking your position relative to the right-hand edge of the road and the centre line.
  • Take extra care in rain, snow, ice or on gravel, as road grip may be poorer in the bend.
  • Avoid overtaking when visibility through the bend is insufficient.

Common misconceptions

  • !Some people confuse the sign with 100.2, but 100.1 shows that the bend goes to the right, not to the left.
  • !Some people think the sign warns of several bends in succession. Several dangerous bends are indicated by sign 102.1 or 102.2.
  • !Some interpret the warning sign as requiring a specific speed, but the correct speed must be assessed based on visibility, the bend, road conditions and other factors.

Theory test tip

First check whether the symbol shows one bend or several, and then which way the first bend goes. A common trap in the theory test is choosing «several dangerous bends, first to the right» when Skilt 100.1 only warns of one dangerous right-hand bend.

Did you know

The direction of the black curve is decisive: Skilt 100.1 and 100.2 are mirror-image variants showing whether the dangerous bend goes to the right or left, respectively.

Frequently asked questions

Do I always have to brake when I see Skilt 100.1?

You must adjust your speed to the bend, visibility, road conditions and traffic. If your speed is already safe, there is no separate requirement to brake simply because the sign is there.

Does the sign mean that the speed limit is cancelled?

No, the sign does not change or cancel the speed limit. Nevertheless, you may have to drive significantly more slowly than the speed limit in order to be able to stop within the section of road you can see.

How do I distinguish 100.1 from the sign for dangerous bends?

Skilt 100.1 shows a single bend to the right. Skilt 102.1 shows a winding course and warns of several dangerous bends, the first of which goes to the right.

Can I overtake in the dangerous right-hand bend?

The sign does not automatically introduce a separate overtaking prohibition. Nevertheless, you must have sufficient clear visibility and be able to complete the overtaking manoeuvre safely, which is often not possible in a dangerous bend.
