Road narrows (106.1)

Road narrows

Warning Signs Sign number: 106.1

The sign warns that the road narrows from both sides.

When you see the sign

Be prepared for the carriageway to narrow from both sides, and reduce your speed if necessary. Position your vehicle carefully, watch for oncoming traffic and assess whether there is enough room for the vehicles to pass each other safely.

Rules

  • Sign 106.1 warns that the road narrows from both the right and left sides.
  • The sign does not give you right of way through the narrow section; any duty to give way must be indicated by other signs or follow from the traffic rules.
  • You must adjust your speed so that you can stop within the section of road you can see clearly, especially if oncoming vehicles may make passing difficult.
  • The sign does not in itself prohibit overtaking or stopping.

Tips

  • Look well ahead to spot oncoming traffic before entering the narrow section.
  • Reduce your speed early if the road width, visibility or size of the oncoming vehicle makes passing uncertain.
  • Keep a safe distance from the road edge, guardrails and obstacles, but avoid positioning your vehicle unnecessarily close to the centre.
  • Look for supplementary plates or other signs that may indicate distance, length or a duty to give way.

Common misconceptions

  • !Some people confuse the sign with 106.2 or 106.3, but on 106.1 both sides point inwards because the narrowing occurs from both sides.
  • !Many people think that whoever arrives first always has right of way. The sign alone does not determine who should proceed first.
  • !Some interpret the sign as an automatic overtaking prohibition, but such a prohibition must be indicated by other signs, road markings or the traffic conditions.

Theory test tip

Look carefully at which side or sides of the symbol bend inwards. If both sides bend inwards, the correct answer is that the road narrows from both sides—not that the road has a dangerous bend or that only one side narrows.

Did you know

The sign’s two black lines mirror the shape of the road ahead: when both lines bend inwards, the road narrows from both sides. On variants 106.2 and 106.3, only one side shows a narrowing.
