Width limit
The prohibition applies to vehicles, including load, with a greater width than indicated.
When you see the sign
Check the vehicle's total width, including any goods or load protruding from the sides, against the width indicated on the sign. If the width is greater than the stated limit, you must not proceed past the sign but choose another route.
Rules
- The prohibition applies to vehicles wider than the measurement shown on the sign.
- Goods and other loads that increase the vehicle's width must be included.
- A vehicle that is exactly as wide as the stated limit is not covered by the wording «greater width», but the driver must still be able to pass safely.
- The prohibition applies regardless of vehicle type, unless a supplementary plate or other signage indicates otherwise.
Tips
- Find out how wide your car is before driving along a road with a width restriction, especially if you are towing a trailer.
- Check whether bicycles, boats or other loads protrude from the sides and increase the total width.
- Do not try to pass simply because the opening looks wide enough; the stated limit is a prohibition, not a recommendation.
- Look for advance warnings and opportunities to take a detour before reaching a narrow section.
Common misconceptions
- Some people think the sign applies only to lorries, but it applies to all vehicles exceeding the stated width.
- Some people consider only the vehicle itself and forget that protruding goods or loads must be included.
- The sign is mistaken for a prohibition applying to all vehicles, even though vehicles within the width limit can normally pass.

Theory test tip
In the theory test, the trap may be a vehicle that is narrower than the limit by itself but has a load protruding from the side. You must compare the number on the sign with the vehicle's total width, including goods.
Did you know
The sign is often used before narrow bridges, tunnels, gates and roadwork areas where wide vehicles cannot pass or do not have a sufficient safety margin.
Frequently asked questions
Does the limit also include the load on the vehicle?
Yes. Goods and loads protruding from the sides must be included when assessing the total width.
Can I pass if the vehicle is exactly as wide as the number on the sign?
The prohibition applies to vehicles with a greater width than indicated. You must nevertheless make sure that you can pass safely without harming people, vehicles or the surroundings.
Does the sign apply only to heavy vehicles?
No. It applies to all vehicles wider than the stated limit, including goods, unless other signage specifies an exception.
What should I do if my vehicle is too wide?
You must not proceed past the sign. Stop or turn around where this can be done legally and safely, and choose another route.
