Speed limit
The prohibition applies to driving at a speed higher than the number of km/h indicated. The prohibition applies on the road section concerned until another speed limit is indicated by a) a new sign 362 “Speed limit” or b) sign 366 “Speed limit zone”, or until one of the following signs is installed: c) sign 364 “End of special speed limit” d) sign 540 “Gatetun” e) sign 548 “Gågate”. When the sign is used for temporary regulation, it may have a yellow background.
When you see the sign
You must have reduced your speed so that you are not travelling faster than 80 km/h when passing the sign. Drive more slowly if the weather, road conditions, visibility, traffic or the vehicle’s characteristics make 80 km/h unsafe.
Rules
- The sign indicates a maximum permitted speed of 80 km/h from the point where it is installed.
- The speed limit applies until a new sign 362 «Speed limit», sign 366 «Speed limit zone», sign 364 «End of special speed limit», sign 540 «Living street» or sign 548 «Pedestrian street».
- A road junction does not cancel the posted speed limit of 80 km/h.
- You may not exceed 80 km/h when overtaking, and any lower speed limit applicable to the vehicle or combination still applies.
Tips
- Start braking in good time so that your speed is no more than 80 km/h when you pass the sign.
- Look out for new speed-limit signs after junctions, but do not assume that the limit has ended just because you pass a junction.
- Reduce your speed clearly below 80 km/h in poor visibility, on slippery roads or on sharp bends.
- Use the speedometer actively on downhill stretches, as the vehicle can easily exceed 80 km/h without you pressing the accelerator any further.
Common misconceptions
- Thinking that 80 km/h is a recommended or minimum speed. The number indicates the maximum permitted speed.
- Thinking that the speed limit ends at the next road junction. It continues until it is changed or ended by a relevant sign.
- Thinking that sign 364 «End of special speed limit» always means 80 km/h. After this sign, the general speed limit applies, normally 50 km/h in built-up areas and 80 km/h outside built-up areas.
Test yourself
Easy
What does this sign mean?
- AThe highest permitted speed is 80 km/t.
- BThe lowest permitted speed is 80 km/t.
- CThe recommended speed is 80 km/t.
- DAll driving beyond the sign is prohibited.
Medium
You pass the sign and then drive through a junction. No new signs have been put up. What is the maximum speed you may drive after the junction?
- AYou may drive at a maximum of 50 km/t.
- BYou may drive at a maximum of 110 km/t.
- CYou may drive at a maximum of 80 km/t.
- DYou may drive at a maximum of 90 km/t.
Hard
You pass the sign outside a built-up area. Later, you pass sign 364 «Slutt på særskilt fartsgrense». No other conditions limit the speed. What is the highest permitted speed after this?
- AThe highest permitted speed is 50 km/t.
- BThe highest permitted speed is 80 km/t.
- CThe highest permitted speed is 90 km/t.
- DThe highest permitted speed is 110 km/t.
Theory test tip
Check whether the question shows a junction after the 80 sign. The junction does not cancel the speed limit; the correct answer is still a maximum of 80 km/h if none of the signs that change or end the limit is shown.
Did you know
80 km/h is also the general speed limit outside built-up areas when no other speed limit has been set. Nevertheless, a posted 80 sign makes the limit explicit and may, among other things, be used after a stretch with a lower speed limit.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive slightly faster than 80 km/h while overtaking?
No. The speed limit also applies while overtaking, and you may not legally exceed 80 km/h to get past more quickly.
Must I always drive at 80 km/h when this sign is present?
No. 80 km/h is the maximum speed, not a required speed, and you must drive more slowly when conditions require it.
Does the 80 km/h limit still apply after a road junction?
Yes, a road junction does not end the posted speed limit. It continues until it is changed or ended by a relevant sign.
What does the sign mean for a driver entering the road from a side road after the sign?
The driver must follow the speed limit that applies on the road. Speed-limit signs may be repeated after junctions to make the limit clear to traffic entering from side roads.
