Speed limit zone
The sign indicates the boundary of an area where driving at a speed exceeding the indicated number of km/h is prohibited. The prohibition applies until it is cancelled by sign 368 “End of speed limit zone”, sign 540 “Gatetun” or sign 548 “Gågate”. The sign also warns that physical speed-reducing devices may be placed in the carriageway.
When you see the sign
Adjust your speed so that, by the time you reach the sign at the latest, you are travelling at no more than the indicated number of km/h. The speed limit applies to the roads within the zone until the zone ends with sign 368 «Slutt på fartsgrensesone», sign 540 «Gatetun» or sign 548 «Gågate».
Rules
- The number on the sign indicates the maximum permitted speed in km/h within the zone.
- The zone limit takes effect at the sign and applies to the roads in the area, not just the first stretch of road after the sign.
- The restriction applies until it is ended by sign 368 «Slutt på fartsgrensesone», sign 540 «Gatetun» or sign 548 «Gågate».
- The indicated speed is a maximum limit; you must drive more slowly when visibility, road conditions, traffic or other circumstances require it.
- The sign also warns that physical speed-reduction measures may be present in the carriageway.
Tips
- Brake before passing the sign so that your speed is already legal when you enter the zone.
- Remember the number on the sign when turning into other streets within the area; the zone limit applies throughout the area.
- Look out for speed bumps, narrowings, raised pedestrian crossings and other speed-reduction measures.
- Do not increase your speed just because you have passed an intersection; an intersection does not end the speed-limit zone.
Common misconceptions
- Thinking that the speed limit applies only on the road where the sign is located and not on the side streets within the zone.
- Thinking that the zone automatically ends at the first intersection.
- Confusing the sign with a regular speed-limit sign and overlooking that the zone may cover an entire residential or town-centre area.

Theory test tip
A common trap is to answer that the limit ends at the next intersection. In the theory test, look for the option stating that the limit applies throughout the zone until it is ended by sign 368, 540 or 548.
Did you know
Speed-limit zones are often used in residential areas and town centres where the same low speed limit is intended to apply on several adjoining streets. The sign expressly warns that physical speed-reduction measures may be present in the carriageway.
Frequently asked questions
Does the speed limit still apply after I turn into a side street?
Yes, if the side street is within the zone. The zone limit applies throughout the area even if the sign is not repeated on every street.
Does the zone end when I pass an intersection?
No, an intersection does not end the speed-limit zone. It applies until it is ended by sign 368 «Slutt på fartsgrensesone», sign 540 «Gatetun» or sign 548 «Gågate».
Do I always have to maintain exactly the speed shown on the sign?
No, the number indicates the maximum permitted speed. You must drive more slowly if the conditions make the indicated speed unsafe.
Can there be speed bumps within the zone?
Yes. The sign also warns that physical speed-reduction measures may be placed in the carriageway.
