Height limit
The prohibition applies to vehicles, including load, with a greater height than indicated.
When you see the sign
Check the vehicle’s actual overall height, including roof loads and other cargo. If the height exceeds the number on the sign, you must stop before reaching it and choose another route.
Rules
- The prohibition applies to vehicles that, including their cargo, are higher than the height indicated on the sign.
- A vehicle that is exactly as high as the indicated limit is not covered by the wording “greater height than indicated”.
- Roof boxes, roof loads, antennas and other equipment or cargo that increase the vehicle’s height must be included in the assessment.
- The prohibition applies to all relevant vehicle types, not just lorries and buses.
Tips
- Find out the vehicle’s overall height before setting off if the car has a roof box, bicycles or other loads on the roof.
- Choose a diversion well in advance if the vehicle is too high, especially before tunnels, bridges and underpasses.
- Do not rely solely on the vehicle’s height stated in the registration document or owner’s manual if you have fitted equipment or loads on the roof.
- Allow a safety margin if the height is very close to the limit, as the load, suspension and uneven road surfaces can affect the actual clearance.
Common misconceptions
- Thinking that the sign applies only to lorries and other large vehicles.
- Forgetting that roof boxes, bicycles and other roof loads count towards the vehicle’s overall height.
- Confusing the sign with a general prohibition on all vehicle traffic.

Easy
What does this sign mean?
- AIt is forbidden to continue driving with a vehicle that, including its load, is higher than indicated.
- BIt is forbidden to continue driving with all vehicles, regardless of their height.
- CIt is forbidden to continue driving from this direction, regardless of the vehicle's height.
- DIt is forbidden to continue driving with lorries and buses, regardless of their height.
Medium
The sign shows 3,5 m. Your van is 3,2 m high, but a roof rack with a load makes the total height 3,6 m. What should you do?
- AYou must choose another route because the total height is too great.
- BYou may continue driving because the vehicle without the load is low enough.
- CYou may continue driving because the prohibition applies only to lorries and buses.
- DYou may continue driving if you pass the sign very slowly and carefully.
Hard
The sign shows 3,5 m, and your vehicle is exactly 3,5 m high with all its load and equipment. What follows from the sign?
- AYou may continue driving because the vehicle is not higher than the indicated limit.
- BYou may not continue driving because the vehicle is as high as the indicated limit.
- CYou may continue driving only if the vehicle is a passenger car without a trailer.
- DYou may not continue driving because the sign prohibits all vehicle traffic on the road.
Theory test tip
In the theory test, the trap may be a passenger car with a roof load. It is the combined height of the vehicle and its load that must be compared with the number on the sign, not just the car’s original height.
Did you know
The sign is often used before tunnels, bridges, underpasses and other places with limited headroom. The figure is given in metres and determines whether the vehicle can legally pass.
Frequently asked questions
Does the limit also apply to an ordinary passenger car?
Yes. The prohibition applies to all vehicles that are higher than the indicated limit, including passenger cars with, for example, a roof box or bicycles on the roof.
Can I pass if the vehicle is exactly as high as the number on the sign?
The wording prohibits vehicles with a greater height than indicated, so an equal height is not directly covered by the prohibition. In practice, however, you should allow a safety margin and not attempt to pass if the measurement is uncertain.
Does the roof load count?
Yes. Cargo, roof boxes, bicycles and anything else that increases the overall height must be included when you assess whether the vehicle can pass.
What should I do if the vehicle is too high?
You must not continue past the height restriction. Stop in a safe place before reaching it and choose an alternative route.
