End of speed limit zone (368)

End of speed limit zone

Prohibitory Signs Sign number: 368

The sign indicates that the speed limit zone ends.

When you see the sign

Maintain the speed limit that applied in the zone until you have passed the sign. After the sign, follow any newly posted speed limit, or the general speed limit of 50 km/t in built-up areas and 80 km/t outside built-up areas.

Rules

  • The sign cancels the speed limit that was set for the zone.
  • The speed limit in the zone applies until you have passed the sign.
  • If a new speed limit is posted, it applies after the sign.
  • If no new speed limit is posted, the general speed limit applies: normally 50 km/t in built-up areas and 80 km/t outside built-up areas.
  • The speed limit that applies after the sign is the maximum permitted speed, not a speed you must always maintain.

Tips

  • Look for a new speed limit sign nearby, and at the same time consider whether you are still in a built-up area.
  • Do not increase your speed until the entire vehicle has passed the sign.
  • Adjust your speed to visibility, road conditions, road width and traffic, even if a higher general speed limit applies.
  • Remember that the diagonal lines mean that a previous zone regulation is ending.

Common misconceptions

  • !Some people think the sign means that there is no longer any speed limit. After the sign, a newly posted or general speed limit still applies.
  • !Some people start accelerating before they have passed the sign, even though the zone speed limit continues to apply until the sign.
  • !Some people automatically assume that the speed limit becomes 80 km/t, but in built-up areas the general limit is normally 50 km/t.

You are driving in a zone with a speed limit of 30 km/h and approach this sign. Immediately after the sign, 60 km/h is signposted as the new speed limit. How do you drive?

  • BI keep to no more than 30 km/h until the sign and may then accelerate towards 60 km/h when conditions permit.
  • CI accelerate towards 60 km/h before the sign because the new speed limit is already visible.
  • DI keep to no more than 30 km/h after the sign as well because the zone limit still applies.

Hard

You pass this sign after driving in a zone with a speed limit of 30 km/h. The road is in a built-up area, and no new speed limit is signposted. What applies?

  • BThe highest permitted speed is normally 80 km/h because the speed-limit zone has ended.
  • CThe highest permitted speed is unlimited because all speed limits have been cancelled.
  • DThe highest permitted speed is normally 50 km/h, but the speed must be adapted to the conditions.

Theory test tip

In the theory test, the trap may be that the old zone speed limit ends, but this does not necessarily mean that you can increase your speed. Look for a new posted limit and consider whether the road is in or outside a built-up area.

Did you know

A speed limit zone is often used in residential areas and other areas with several connecting roads. A single zone sign at the entrance can set the same speed limit throughout the area until the zone ends with this sign.

Frequently asked questions

Can I increase my speed as soon as I see the sign?

No. The speed limit in the zone applies until you have passed the sign, after which you must check which speed limit applies further on.

What applies if there is no new speed limit sign afterwards?

The general speed limit applies. This is normally 50 km/t in built-up areas and 80 km/t outside built-up areas.

Does the sign mean that all prohibitions in the area end?

No. The sign only ends the speed limit zone and does not cancel other prohibitions, mandatory requirements or local regulations.

Is the speed limit always higher after the sign?

No. A newly posted limit may be the same or lower, and the general speed limit may also be the same as the zone speed limit.
