End of no overtaking
The sign indicates that the prohibition on overtaking ends.
When you see the sign
When you pass the sign, the signposted no-overtaking restriction ends. However, you may only overtake if the road markings, visibility, traffic conditions and other traffic rules make it legal and safe to do so.
Rules
- The sign marks the point where a previously signposted no-overtaking restriction ends.
- The sign does not require you to overtake and does not mean that overtaking is automatically safe.
- You must still follow the road markings; a solid line may prevent you from completing an overtaking manoeuvre.
- Overtaking is only permitted when it can be carried out without danger or unnecessary obstruction to other road users.
- Other overtaking rules, including those applying at pedestrian crossings, junctions and places with poor visibility, still apply.
Tips
- Wait until you have passed the sign and checked the road markings before overtaking.
- Look well ahead for oncoming traffic, hilltops, bends and new signs before starting to overtake.
- Check your mirrors and blind spot, and use your indicators before changing lanes.
- Do not let yourself be pressured into overtaking simply because the vehicle in front increases its speed after the sign.
Common misconceptions
- Assuming that the sign means all overtaking is permitted regardless of solid lines, visibility and traffic conditions.
- Confusing the sign with a sign that prohibits further entry or travel for all vehicles.
- Starting to overtake before passing the sign, even though the no-overtaking restriction remains in force until the sign.

Theory test tip
In the theory test, the common trap is to interpret the sign as a general permission to overtake. The correct interpretation is that only the signposted no-overtaking restriction ends; solid lines and all other rules still apply.
Did you know
The sign indicates that a restriction has been lifted and is often used where road conditions once again provide better visibility, for example after a bend, hilltop or another section where overtaking has been specifically prohibited.
Frequently asked questions
Can I overtake immediately after passing the sign?
Only if overtaking is permitted and safe. Among other things, you must check visibility, oncoming traffic, road markings and any other signs.
Can I cross a solid line after the sign?
No, the sign does not override the road markings. A solid line still applies even though the signposted no-overtaking restriction has ended.
Does the sign cancel other restrictions on the road?
No, it only cancels the specific no-overtaking restriction. Other prohibitions, mandatory requirements and traffic rules still apply.
Do I have to overtake when I see the sign?
No, the sign does not require you to overtake. It only indicates that the previously signposted no-overtaking restriction has ended.
