Stop for specified purpose
The sign indicates a prohibition against continuing to drive before a stop has been made for the purpose specified in text on the sign.
When you see the sign
You must stop at the sign or at the associated payment point and pay the fee before driving on. You may continue only once payment has been made and it is clear and permitted to proceed.
Rules
- The sign prohibits driving on until you have stopped to pay the fee.
- You must stop at the designated payment point, for example at a booth, machine or barrier.
- You must follow signals, barriers, lane markings and instructions from staff on site.
- The sign is not a permanent prohibition on driving on; the prohibition ends once the required stop has been made and payment has been completed.
Tips
- Slow down early and choose a lane according to the indicated payment method.
- Stop so that you can reach the payment machine or booth without opening the door or reversing.
- Have your means of payment ready if the facility does not use automatic registration.
- Wait until the barrier is fully open or a signal indicates that you may proceed.
Common misconceptions
- Some people think the sign means that entry is prohibited, but it only requires you to stop and pay before continuing.
- Some confuse it with an ordinary stop sign and think stopping is enough; here, the fee must also be paid.
- Some follow the vehicle ahead through the barrier without making their own payment or receiving approval, even though each passage must be processed according to the payment arrangement.

Theory test tip
In the theory test, the trap may be the distinction between “stop” and “prohibited from driving on”. The correct answer is that you must both stop and pay the fee; you may then continue when the facility permits it.
Did you know
Skilt 324.2 is designed like a stop sign, but the text indicates that the stop has a specific purpose: paying a fee. It may be used at payment facilities where the driver must stop before proceeding.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to stop even if there is no other traffic?
Yes. The requirement to stop and pay applies regardless of the volume of traffic, unless the payment facility expressly indicates a different arrangement for your lane.
Is this the same as the sign «Innkjøring forbudt»?
No. «Innkjøring forbudt» prohibits driving past the sign from the relevant direction, whereas Skilt 324.2 allows you to continue after you have stopped and paid.
Can I continue immediately after I have paid?
You may continue when the payment has been approved and the barrier, traffic signal or staff indicates that passage is permitted. At the same time, check that the road ahead is clear.
Is it enough just to stop for a moment?
No. The purpose of stopping is to pay the fee, so a brief stop without payment does not meet the sign’s requirements.
