Prohibition of U-turns
The prohibition applies up to and including the first intersection.
When you see the sign
You must not turn your vehicle around on the section of road after the sign or at the first intersection. Continue past the intersection and find another place where turning around is permitted and can be carried out without danger or unnecessary obstruction.
Rules
- The sign prohibits turning around, that is, turning the vehicle to drive back in the opposite direction.
- The prohibition applies from the sign up to and including the first intersection.
- A normal left turn is not the same as turning around and is permitted unless other signs, signals or road markings prohibit it.
- Once the prohibition has ended, you may only turn around if the manoeuvre can be carried out without danger or unnecessary obstruction to other road users.
Tips
- Plan an alternative route ahead instead of trying to turn around before or at the first intersection.
- Remember the words «up to and including»: You must pass the entire first intersection before this sign's prohibition ends.
- Check for other regulations, such as no-left-turn signs, lane arrows or a solid line, before choosing an alternative manoeuvre.
- Do not use a driveway or opening along the road to carry out a three-point turn; it is still turning around.
Common misconceptions
- Believing that the sign prohibits all left turns. It prohibits turning around, not necessarily a normal left turn.
- Believing that the prohibition ends as soon as you reach the first intersection. The intersection is also covered.
- Confusing the sign with No entry or No vehicles. You may continue past the sign, but you may not turn around.

Easy
What does this sign mean?
- AAll vehicles are prohibited from continuing.
- BIt is prohibited to turn the vehicle around in order to drive back.
- CIt is prohibited to turn left at the next junction.
- DIt is prohibited to enter the road from this side.
Medium
You pass the sign and reach the first road junction. You want to make an ordinary left turn onto a side road. What do you do?
- AI stop before the junction because all vehicles are prohibited from continuing.
- BI turn left if no other signs, signals or road markings prohibit it.
- CI drive straight ahead because all left turns are prohibited until the next road junction.
- DI turn around at the junction because the prohibition ends when I reach the junction.
Hard
You have passed the sign and drive through the first road junction. Where can you turn around at the earliest?
- AI can turn around just before the junction, provided there is no other traffic on the road.
- BI can turn around after passing the entire junction, provided this can be done without danger or unnecessary obstruction.
- CI can turn around inside the junction because the prohibition ends when I drive into it.
- DI can turn around only after the second junction because the prohibition always applies through two junctions.
Theory test tip
A typical trap is an answer stating that the prohibition only applies up to the first intersection. The correct wording is «up to and including the first intersection», so you cannot turn around in the intersection itself either.
Did you know
The sign is often used where turning around could create dangerous situations or obstruct traffic flow, for example on roads with heavy traffic or at intersections with limited visibility. Its area of application is expressly set as up to and including the first intersection.
Frequently asked questions
Can I turn left after the sign?
Yes, a normal left turn may be permitted because it is not turning around. However, you must still follow other signs, traffic lights, road markings and right-of-way rules.
Can I turn around at the first intersection?
No. The prohibition applies up to and including the first intersection, so you must have passed through the entire intersection before this sign's prohibition ends.
Can I carry out a three-point turn before the intersection?
No. A three-point turn is also turning around and is covered by the prohibition, even if you use a driveway or the edge of the road during the manoeuvre.
Is turning around automatically permitted after the first intersection?
This sign's prohibition has ended, but other regulations may still prohibit the manoeuvre. The turn must also be possible without danger or unnecessary obstruction.
