Dead end (527.4)

Dead end

Information Signs Sign number: 527.4

The sign shows that the intersecting road is closed to motor traffic, but open to pedestrians and cyclists.

When you see the sign

Be aware that the intersecting road cannot be used as a through route by car, even though pedestrians and cyclists can continue. If you intend to turn into it, make sure your destination can be reached before the closure and be prepared to turn around.

Rules

  • The sign indicates that the intersecting road is closed to motor traffic, but remains connected for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • The sign does not in itself prohibit you from driving into the intersecting road; properties and other destinations before the closure can normally be reached unless other signs prohibit this.
  • You cannot assume that you will be able to pass the closure by car, even if the road continues on the other side.
  • The sign does not change the give-way rules at the junction. Right of way must be determined by other signs, road markings and the general give-way rules.

Tips

  • Do not turn in if you need a through road for cars; choose another route.
  • Look out for cyclists who may be able to use the connection even though cars cannot.
  • If your destination is on the closed road, consider in advance where you can turn around without reversing out into the junction.
  • Pay close attention to the direction of the symbols so that you can see which side of the intersecting road is closed to motor traffic.

Common misconceptions

  • !Assuming that the sign means a complete no-entry restriction. It primarily indicates that cars cannot drive through.
  • !Assuming that pedestrians and cyclists also face a dead end. This variant explicitly shows that they can continue.
  • !Confusing the sign with a motorway or motor traffic road sign and assuming that it introduces special rules or a new speed limit.

Dead end (527.4)

What does this sign indicate about the intersecting road?

  • AThe road is closed to all traffic, including pedestrians and cyclists.
  • BThe road has a kollektivfelt (bus lane) that is open only to buses and taxis.
  • CThe road is a motortrafikkveg (motor traffic road) with special traffic rules.
  • DThe road is closed to through traffic by car, but open to pedestrians and cyclists.

Medium

You are going to visit a property on the intersecting road before the closure. No other signs prohibit entry. What can you do?

  • AYou can drive to the property, but cannot expect to pass the closure.
  • BYou must choose another road because only pedestrians can use the road.
  • CYou can drive in and pass the closure if the road continues on the other side.
  • DYou must park before the intersection because all entry onto the road is prohibited.

Hard

You are approaching the intersection without any other signs or road markings. A vehicle comes from the right out of the intersecting road. How should you proceed?

  • AYou must give way because the sign does not change the ordinary vikepliktsreglene (give-way rules).
  • BYou should go first because traffic from the intersecting road always has a duty to give way.
  • CYou should go first because the sign gives you priority through the entire intersection.
  • DYou must give way only if the vehicle from the right is a bus or taxi.

Theory test tip

A common trap is to answer that nobody can continue. Look for the marking showing that the connection is open to pedestrians and cyclists, while motor traffic cannot drive through.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive into the intersecting road?

Yes, you can normally drive in to reach a destination before the closure, provided that no other signs prohibit it. However, you cannot use the road as a through route by car.

Can cyclists and pedestrians pass the closure?

Yes. This is precisely what distinguishes this variant from a connection that is closed to all road-user groups.

Does the sign give me a duty to give way at the junction?

No. The sign is an information sign and does not establish a duty to give way. You must follow any give-way signs, road markings and the general give-way rules.

Does the sign mean that the road physically ends?

Not necessarily. The road or a connection may continue, but it is closed so that cars cannot drive through, while pedestrians and cyclists can pass.
