  • The sign indicates that your direction of travel is wrong for the permitted or intended flow of traffic.
  • You must not continue in the wrong direction, but stop as soon as this can be done without creating a new hazard.
  • You may only turn around or reverse if the manoeuvre is permitted and can be carried out safely; turning around and reversing are normally prohibited on motorways and motor traffic roads.

Tips

  • Brake in a controlled manner and avoid making a sudden turn in front of other traffic.
  • Look for road markings, directional arrows and signs showing how you can return to the correct direction of travel.
  • On an exit ramp, you should correct the mistake before entering the main road, but only when this can be done safely.
  • Do not blindly rely on your navigation system if it directs you towards this sign.

Frequently asked questions

Can I continue to the next exit?

No. Continuing could take you directly towards oncoming traffic, so you must stop as soon as this can be done safely.

Do I have to turn around immediately?

You must correct your direction of travel, but not by making a sudden or illegal manoeuvre. Stop safely first and assess how you can return without putting others at risk.

What should I do if I have already entered a motorway in the wrong direction?

This is an acute hazardous situation. Reduce your speed, stop as safely as possible, switch on your hazard warning lights and call 112 for guidance; do not continue or make a normal U-turn on the motorway.

Is this the same as Innkjøring forbudt?

No. This is an information sign telling you that you are actually travelling in the wrong direction, whereas the «Innkjøring forbudt» sign indicates that entering from the relevant direction is prohibited.
