Living street (Gatetun)
The sign indicates the boundary of an area where the provisions of the trafikkreglene concerning gatetun apply. Obstacles are not separately marked or indicated. The sign applies until it is cancelled by sign 542 “End of gatetun”.
When you see the sign
Reduce your speed to walking pace and be prepared for pedestrians, children playing and physical obstacles in the roadway. Drive with pedestrians’ needs in mind, and only park in specifically designated spaces.
Rules
- You must drive at walking pace in a home zone.
- Drivers must give way to pedestrians in the home zone.
- Parking is only permitted in specifically designated spaces.
- Pedestrians may use the entire roadway, and playing is permitted, but pedestrians must not unnecessarily obstruct drivers.
- When leaving a home zone, you must give way to other road users.
Tips
- Keep your speed low enough to stop immediately if a child or pedestrian steps out in front of your vehicle.
- Look out for flower boxes, benches, narrowing sections and other obstacles that may not be marked or signposted.
- Do not assume that an empty space along the edge can be used for parking; look for clearly designated parking spaces.
- Pay particular attention when leaving the area, because you must then give way to other road users.
Common misconceptions
- Assuming that the usual speed limit in a built-up area applies as a practical driving speed. In a home zone, you must drive at walking pace.
- Assuming that pedestrians should only use the pavement or road edge. They may use the entire roadway in the home zone.
- Assuming that the sign only warns of a residential area. It introduces special rules that apply until sign 542 «Slutt på gatetun».

Theory test tip
A common trap is to choose a specific number as the speed limit. The rule is walking pace, not 30 or 50 km/t, and parking is only permitted in specifically designated spaces.
Did you know
A home zone is designed as a shared living and traffic area, so skiltforskriften specifies that obstacles in the area are not separately marked or signposted.
Frequently asked questions
How fast can I drive in the area?
You must drive at walking pace. Your speed must be low enough to account for pedestrians, children playing and unexpected obstacles.
Do I have to give way to pedestrians?
Yes, drivers must give way to pedestrians in the home zone. Pedestrians may use the entire roadway, but must not unnecessarily obstruct traffic.
Can I park along the edge if I do not block the road?
No, parking is only permitted in specifically designated spaces. The fact that the vehicle is not causing an obstruction does not make the parking lawful.
How long do the rules apply?
The rules apply from the sign and throughout the entire area. They end at sign 542 «Slutt på gatetun».
