Lane ends (532.h11)

Lane ends

Information Signs Sign number: 532.h11

Drivers in a lane that ends shall change lanes and have vikeplikt in accordance with the provisions of trafikkreglene.

When you see the sign

Identify which lane is ending and plan a controlled lane change well in advance. If you are in the lane that is ending, use your turn signal, check your mirrors and blind spot, and give way to traffic in the lane you are moving into.

Rules

  • The driver in the lane that is ending must move into a lane that continues.
  • When changing lanes, the driver in the lane that is ending must give way to vehicles already in the lane they are moving into.
  • The turn signal must be given well in advance of the lane change, but using your turn signal does not give you the right to move into the other lane.
  • The sign does not indicate a merge with mutual adjustment; the driver who must leave the ending lane has the duty to give way.

Tips

  • Read the arrow symbol on the sign early so you can see which lane is ending.
  • Check your interior mirror, side mirror and blind spot before moving the vehicle sideways.
  • Adjust your speed to find a safe gap, and avoid forcing your way in right at the end of the lane.
  • If you are in the lane that continues, drive predictably and avoid deliberately closing a gap.

Common misconceptions

  • !Assuming that traffic should merge alternately, one vehicle at a time. Instead, this sign means that the driver in the lane that is ending has the duty to give way.
  • !Assuming that using your turn signal gives you priority to change lanes.
  • !Confusing the sign with a sign indicating the end of motorveg, motortrafikkveg or a special lane.

Easy

Lane ends (532.h11)

What does the sign indicate?

  • AThat two lanes merge, and that drivers should let one car through at a time alternately
  • BThat a motorveg ends, and that the ordinary traffic rules apply again
  • CThat a lane ends, and that the driver in this lane must change lanes and give way
  • DThat a heavy-traffic lane ends, and that the lane becomes available to all vehicles

Medium

You are driving in the lane that ends, and a car is beside you in the lane that continues. What do you do?

  • AI maintain the same speed and move in front of the car because traffic must merge alternately.
  • BI stop immediately in the lane and wait, even though there is plenty of space behind the car.
  • CI signal well in advance, adjust my speed, and wait until I can change lanes without obstructing the car.
  • DI signal well in advance and change lanes because the indicator requires the other car to let me in.

Hard

There is a queue in both lanes. The road markings and the sign show that your lane ends, while the adjacent lane continues. Which statement is correct?

  • AThe driver in the lane that ends has vikeplikt even when traffic is moving slowly in a queue.
  • BThe driver in the lane that continues has vikeplikt because the car from the side lane must change lanes.
  • CThe driver in the lane that ends may keep their place if the indicator was turned on early.
  • DThe drivers have mutual vikeplikt and should let one car through at a time alternately when traffic is moving slowly in a queue.

Theory test tip

Look for the difference between a lane that clearly ends and two lanes that merge together. When one specific lane ends, the correct answer is normally that the driver in that lane must change lanes and has the duty to give way.

Did you know

The sign comes in different designs so that the diagram can show the current lane arrangement and which lane is ending. It is used, among other places, where roads narrow, after overtaking lanes and when the number of lanes changes.

Frequently asked questions

Who has the duty to give way when one lane ends?

The driver in the lane that is ending has the duty to give way when changing lanes. Traffic already travelling in the lane that continues does not have the duty to give way as a result of this sign.

Should vehicles let in every other vehicle?

No, the sign does not indicate a merge with mutual adjustment. The driver in the lane that is ending must wait until the lane change can be completed without obstructing traffic in the lane that continues.

Can I wait until the last metre before changing lanes?

You should plan the lane change well in advance and use a safe gap. Waiting too long can lead to sudden braking or mean that you cannot change lanes without failing to give way.

Do I have the right to change lanes when I use my turn signal?

No, the turn signal only indicates what you intend to do. You must still check your mirrors and blind spot and give way to traffic in the lane you are moving into.
