Lane ends (532.h02)

Lane ends

Information Signs Sign number: 532.h02

Drivers in a lane that ends shall change lanes and have vikeplikt in accordance with the provisions of trafikkreglene.

When you see the sign

Identify which lane the sign indicates is ending, and plan a controlled lane change before the lane runs out. Check your mirrors and blind spot, signal, and change lanes only when you can do so without obstructing traffic in the lane you are moving into. You must give way when changing from the lane that is ending.

Rules

  • Drivers in the lane that is ending must move into the lane that continues.
  • The driver changing lanes must give way to traffic in the lane they are moving into.
  • You must signal well in advance, but signalling does not give you the right to move in front of others.
  • The sign does not automatically indicate mutual merging; the driver in the lane that is ending must give way.

Tips

  • Read the arrows on the sign early so that you can see which lane is ending.
  • Adjust your speed to find a safe gap without forcing others to brake or swerve.
  • Check your mirrors and blind spot immediately before changing lanes, especially for motorcycles and cars travelling close alongside you.
  • Avoid stopping unnecessarily at the end of the lane; plan the lane change so that it can be completed smoothly.

Common misconceptions

  • !Assuming that traffic in the lane that continues must always let one vehicle in every other turn.
  • !Assuming that using your turn signal gives you priority when changing lanes.
  • !Confusing the sign with a sign indicating that a motorway, motor traffic road or a special lane begins or ends.

Theory test tip

Look carefully to see whether one lane is shown as ending or whether two lanes merge. When one lane ends, a typical theory-test trap is to claim that both drivers have an equal duty to merge by taking turns; the correct rule is that the driver in the lane that is ending must change lanes and give way.

Did you know

The arrows on the sign show both which lane continues and which lane ends. This distinguishes it from the sign for merging, where drivers must adjust their speed mutually and continue by taking turns.

Frequently asked questions

Who has to give way when the lane ends?

The driver in the lane that is ending must give way when changing lanes. The lane change must not force traffic in the through lane to brake sharply or swerve.

Do I have to change lanes as soon as I see the sign?

No, but you should plan the lane change early and find a safe gap. You can continue in the lane towards its end, but you must still give way when changing lanes.

Do I have the right to be let in when I use my turn signal?

No, your turn signal only indicates what you intend to do. You must wait until the lane change can be carried out safely and without obstructing others.

Is this the same as merging?

No. With this sign, one specific lane is shown as ending, and the driver in that lane must give way when changing lanes. With the sign for merging, drivers must instead adjust their speed mutually and continue by taking turns.
