Lane division
The sign indicates the number of lanes on the carriageway and the direction of travel for the individual lanes. Special regulations applying to individual lanes may be shown on the sign. 539 (Example)
When you see the sign
Move into the lane for your direction of travel and be aware that you have only one lane available. The other two lanes carry traffic in the opposite direction and must not be used by you.
Rules
- The sign indicates that the road has two lanes for traffic travelling in the opposite direction and one lane for traffic travelling in your direction.
- You must follow the lane designated for your direction of travel, in accordance with road markings and any solid lines.
- The sign does not, by itself, give you permission to overtake or cross the line separating the directions of travel.
- The sign does not set a specific speed limit; the posted speed limit or the general speed limit applies.
Tips
- Look ahead for arrows, lane lines and any median barrier to understand how the road continues.
- Keep a good distance from the vehicle in front, since you do not have an extra lane in your direction of travel.
- Do not follow vehicles travelling in the opposite direction into one of their two lanes.
- Be prepared for the lane arrangement to change further along a 2+1 road.
Common misconceptions
- Some people think that two of the lanes are for traffic travelling in their own direction, but the sign shows the opposite: you have only one lane.
- Some people confuse the sign with motorveg or motortrafikkveg, but it does not introduce any such special rules.
- Some people think the sign indicates a heavy-vehicle lane or bus lane, but all the lanes are ordinary traffic lanes divided between the two directions of travel.

Theory test tip
Look closely at the direction of the arrows: the trap is often to count three lanes without checking which direction of travel they belong to. Here, two lanes are for traffic coming towards you, while only one is for traffic travelling in your direction.
Did you know
The sign is used, among other places, on 2+1 roads, where one direction of travel may have two lanes over one section before the arrangement changes further ahead. Such roads often have a physical separation between the directions of travel, but the sign alone does not indicate that there is a median barrier.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use one of the other two lanes for overtaking?
No, they are intended for traffic travelling in the opposite direction. You must follow the road markings, solid lines and other rules governing lane position and overtaking.
Does the sign mean that the road is a motorveg?
No. motorveg is indicated by sign 502, whereas this sign only shows how the lanes are divided between the two directions of travel.
Does the sign indicate a specific speed limit?
No, the sign does not change the speed limit. You must follow the applicable posted speed limit or the general speed limit if no other limit is posted.
Can the lane arrangement change further ahead?
Yes. On a 2+1 road, the direction of travel with two lanes may change, and the new lane arrangement will normally be shown by signs and road markings.
