Fire extinguisher
The sign indicates that a fire extinguisher is available at or near the road.
When you see the sign
Be aware that a fire extinguisher is located at or near the road. You do not need to stop, but in the event of a fire, you can follow the signs to the extinguisher if it is safe to do so.
Rules
- Skilt 606 indicates the location of a fire extinguisher at or near the road.
- The sign does not require you to stop or use the extinguisher.
- You must not stop in a way that blocks the road or obstructs emergency vehicles, unless an emergency makes it necessary.
- In the event of a fire, notify the emergency services by calling 110 and only attempt to extinguish it if this can be done safely.
Tips
- Take note of the extinguisher’s location when you pass the sign, especially in a tunnel or on a road section a long way from emergency assistance.
- In the event of a fire, you should stop in a safe place, switch off the engine and move people away from the danger area before considering attempting to extinguish it.
- Do not open the bonnet fully in the event of an engine fire, as the additional oxygen can cause the fire to flare up violently.
Common misconceptions
- Some people confuse the sign with an emergency telephone and think it shows where they can call for help.
- Some people think the sign indicates a vehicle repair shop or other technical service.
- Some people interpret the sign as requiring them to stop, but it is a service sign providing information.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to stop when I see the sign?
No. The sign only indicates that a fire extinguisher is located at or near the road.
Can I use the extinguisher if a vehicle catches fire?
Yes, provided the extinguisher is accessible and the fire can be tackled without putting yourself or others at risk. Notify the fire service by calling 110 and move away if the fire develops.
Does the sign also mean that there is an emergency telephone at the location?
No, not necessarily. An emergency telephone has its own sign, number 605, so you must look for this or other information about the telephone.
