Lane line
A lane line may be crossed when this is done in accordance with the provisions of trafikkreglene.
When you see the sign
A white lane line normally separates lanes carrying traffic in the same direction. You may cross the line when changing lanes is permitted, but you must check the traffic, signal and give way to traffic in the lane you are moving into.
Rules
- The white lane line may be crossed when this is done in accordance with the traffic rules.
- When changing lanes, you must give way to vehicles already in the lane you want to move into.
- You must signal clearly before changing lanes or otherwise moving the vehicle sideways.
- The line does not by itself permit overtaking if signs, other road markings or traffic conditions make the manoeuvre illegal or unsafe.
Tips
- Check the interior mirror, side mirror and blind spot before crossing the line.
- Signal well in advance, but remember that indicating does not give you priority.
- Change lanes calmly and clearly without driving over the line for longer than necessary.
- Pay attention to the line's colour and pattern: A white broken lane line must not be confused with a white warning line or a barrier line.
Common misconceptions
- Believing that a broken lane line can always be crossed without taking traffic in the adjacent lane into account.
- Believing that using the indicators gives you the right to change lanes in front of other vehicles.
- Confusing the lane line with the warning line, which warns of danger when changing lanes, or with the barrier line, which must not be crossed.
Theory test tip
In the theory test, the trap is often the word «may»: You may cross the lane line, but only when the manoeuvre is permitted and safe. You still have a duty to give way when changing lanes, and indicating does not give you priority.
Did you know
Road markings are considered official traffic signs under the Regulations on Public Traffic Signs. White markings are normally used between lanes carrying traffic in the same direction, while yellow markings normally separate traffic travelling in opposite directions.
Frequently asked questions
Can I always cross a white lane line?
No. The line may be crossed, but only when the lane change or manoeuvre is legal and can be carried out without danger or unnecessary obstruction.
Who has to give way when I cross the line to change lanes?
You must give way to vehicles already travelling in the lane you are moving into. This applies even if you signalled well in advance.
What is the difference between a lane line and a barrier line?
A lane line is broken and may be crossed when the traffic rules permit it. A barrier line is solid and, as a general rule, must not be driven on or crossed.
What is the difference between a white lane line and a white warning line?
Both are broken, but the warning line has a pattern that highlights the danger associated with changing lanes. The lane line is the standard marking between lanes and does not carry the same warning of danger.
