Lane line (1000.gul)

Lane line

Road Markings Sign number: 1000.gul

A lane line may be crossed when this is done in accordance with the provisions of trafikkreglene.

When you see the sign

A yellow lane line normally separates lanes carrying traffic in opposite directions. You may cross the line when permitted by the traffic rules, but only if the manoeuvre can be carried out legally and without danger or unnecessary obstruction.

Rules

  • As a general rule, yellow road markings are used between lanes carrying traffic in opposite directions.
  • A yellow lane line is broken and may be crossed when this is done in accordance with the traffic rules.
  • The line itself does not authorise overtaking; visibility, other traffic, signs and all other rules must make the overtaking legal and safe.
  • You should normally keep to the right of the yellow lane line.
  • A yellow lane line must not be confused with a yellow solid line, which you are not permitted to drive on, over or to the left of.

Tips

  • Check that the line is actually broken before considering crossing it.
  • Look well ahead and make sure the oncoming lane is clear for the entire distance you need.
  • Check your mirrors and blind spot, signal well in advance and move calmly back to the right after a legal overtaking manoeuvre.
  • Be aware that the lane line may change into a warning line or a solid line further ahead.

Common misconceptions

  • !Thinking that a yellow lane line can never be crossed because it separates oncoming traffic.
  • !Interpreting the broken line as automatic permission to overtake, even when visibility or the traffic situation makes it illegal or dangerous.
  • !Confusing a yellow lane line with a yellow warning line; the warning line has longer markings and indicates that visibility is too short for normal overtaking.

Theory test tip

In the theory test, the trap may be that both a yellow lane line and a yellow solid line separate oncoming traffic. Look at the type of line: The broken lane line may be crossed when the traffic rules permit it, whereas you may not drive on or over the solid line.

Did you know

In Norway, the colour shows what type of traffic the line separates: A yellow line normally separates traffic travelling in opposite directions, while a white line normally separates lanes carrying traffic in the same direction.

Frequently asked questions

Can I overtake across a yellow lane line?

Yes, provided that overtaking is otherwise permitted and can be carried out safely, without danger or unnecessary obstruction. The broken line alone does not mean that overtaking is always legal.

What is the difference between a yellow and a white lane line?

A yellow lane line normally separates traffic travelling in opposite directions. A white lane line normally separates lanes carrying traffic in the same direction.

What is the difference between a yellow lane line and a yellow warning line?

Both are broken, but the warning line has longer markings and shorter gaps. A yellow warning line means that visibility ahead is too short for normal overtaking.

Can I cross the line to turn into a side road or onto a property?

Yes, a yellow lane line may be crossed when the turn is legal and can be carried out safely. You must give way to any traffic you cross or to which you otherwise have a duty to give way.
